Personally, seems like having a rear motored pickup is wacky, but I do dig the truck and the video and the music too. Honestly, after one listening, not sure I understand the song, but that is mostly cause I am pretty stupid.

Reminds me of a Type 3 VW I saw at Pomona about 15 years ago. it had the back wagon section cut off turning it into a pickup of sorts with a SBC mounted in the back with marine style over the top extractors.

The song is about small town saskatchewan, written about a local bar-room-hero, the late Johnny Lewis. If you knew John, you'd understand the song much better, so most people unfortunately won't get it. The video was filmed start to finish at the local bar.

Thats some clean work, Mud. I did a rear engine El Dorado once, but not nearly as nicely as you've done with your truck. Kudos.

  14. Nice updates! Have you considered frenching the tail lights a little? They look good from directly behind, but from the side a little added on if you know what I mean.

  15. wow, this is freakin cool! was stayin with a guy in ausy and he had a front wheel drive 72 455 olds. i told him to cut it up an put the engine/trans axel in the back of a pickup! then i find this thread. very cool.

I just found this thread in a search, I can't believe I missed it the first time around.

    Any more updates?

Really interesting to hear that it drives good! People tend to speculate that anything with the motor at or behind the rear wheels is going to drive bad. I've always believed that as long as the springs are correct, it could be damn good.

Do you have pics of the rear suspension? Is it using standard toro arms and spindles? Do you know if the axles are custom? What springs are you using on the front?

I'm really glad to see this truck exist. I've been wanting to build this for about 15yrs now. I had a 76 Eldorado for the drivetrain, and the rear suspension from a late 80's 535i BMW. The big plan was to make a highrise tube intake with 8 1bbl motorcycle carbs with 2ft tubes on them, and boat headers, so all this crazy shit would be sticking out of the bed. Never got farther than the parts collection, couldn't find the truck I wanted.

    Really glad to see this!

Taillights will get frenched in about a half an inch or so to make em look like they belong.

The control arms are custom built from steel tubing and rod ends, and the knuckles have been chopped off top and bottom to accomodate them (no ball joints). It rides on coilovers now (750lb rating...) instead of the stock torsion bar that the Toronado had. The front has cut coils, not sure out of what, but they are quite soft.

I have a set of old 70's boat headers that look like limefires, but unfortunately they won't fit. It'd be nice to find some affordable ones out there that are huge like the drag boats have, but most sell for $1000+.

I've been watching this thread when it pops up to the top. Absolutley dig it! my 1st truck was a '63 longbed then later a '66 panel with shag carpet & beanbag chairs in the back. Both were terminally rusted out by the time I was done with them. Yours is waaay cool. Please keep us posted.

Haha, the truck is pretty much completely disassembled right now, so yes, updates will come shortly. By the time spring hits, the plan is to have it finished, in it's full custom form. New paint, interior and engine components are sure to really help me get the look/feel I'm going for (if I really knew what that was day after day).

Oh, and for you readers out there, I made the Calgary Sun, not to mention Quick Times magazine next month.

Also, anyone with a really wild grille suggestion, lemme know. I've got a few ideas, but nothing really solid. I have the minty 64 chevy grille that's in it, and also a minty 64 GMC grille at my disposal, but I'm not limited to either.

If everything had a reason behind it ...the world would be a boring place. If even one person thinks it's cool who needs a reason? It's cool !

  27. Mudpile, It is nice to see someone thinking outside the box , I love the truck but I would bet it had some interesting whiskey soaked moments. But I guess our winters give rise to odd ideas about that old caddie in the field beside the local watering hole. Keep up the great work , Rob.

how about that? That's really cool, and you took something that someone had started that may have never been up to it's full potential and would have just been weird, and improved upon it in every way. nice.

  29. I think with a few tweaks, it could have a show rod appeal. Some different wheels, different engine accessories, and the right interior and it would be great. It's different, but in a fun way.

I guess he needs lot's of leg room. ;)

Should have no problem lifting the front wheels.
