Beano, I'm digging your new ride. Great find, and you'll have it in the road faster than you would your old A.

'Beaner, I'm sure you realize that whatever part you need to get that lil critter going is just a post and a UPS ride away. I don't have an extra Chevy scattershield at the moment but I'm sure there's a HAMBER in your area who does.
I got my last one through word of mouth, $120 and he delivered it. Beats $495 bucks for a new Lakewood.
Put a good one in there, best to keep both feet if you can.

  6. That is me about 14 years ago give or take. That is Brad's (blackmerc) arm handing me a head nut and I was bitching about how many damned rocker cover bolts this old motor has. LOL

  7. I think that there is a Schiefer here close that is available. I got no idea on cost but you know must cost less that a prosthetic. Something will come up it always does.

@rusty rocket that is the basic configuration of at least 90% of the Crosleys I have seen in my time. I don't know what class they actually ran in, but they are cool like that.

@saltflats If I built a second rad mount and used side mounts I got an idea that it would be easy enough to run a SBC and later switch to a high winding 396. Of course if a man had a 409 and a 348 crank they could build a real oddball and have a lot of fun with it. ;)

@KCTA Chris the amazing thing about Cool Hand Luke was not so much how fast it was, tit was the fact that it was being driven by a little kid. LOL I loved watching that one.

I recall an oddball vintage inspired centrifugal supercharger that could fit under that '40 hood.
Loanable for the drags of course.

  9. I got an idea that I won't be needing to huff it until I am ready to play with the big boys. You may check on the scatter shield for me though of you don't mind.

Beaner, is this going to be a strip only car? Any thoughts on getting it on the road?

Very cool! Make your way to the hotrod hill climb or the dirt drags and you should be able to see the caddy, that used to power the Crosley, run up the hill in a hot rod!

  20. Rad man. For some reason in my mind the car was red with white coves. That little corvette is sweet. Not likely the bean mobile will ever be that sweet.

I had been depending on trading a nice stock Rupp Racing cart for a 46/47 Crosley sedan; I wanted to build something similar to the pic Anthony posted that a "friend" of mine had, notice the word had..He sold it with out giving me a thought which made the third time of similar deals with him..Not a friend anymore..

When Fageol produced the engines they could be had with that roots type supercharger kit right from the factory, horizontal or vertical [outboard] applications..45 hp from 44cu in..The blowers were available up through Crofton manufacture of the engines till about 63' when Croftonl sold out to Homelite..Homelite only made them in outboards, increasing the bore and stroke by 1/4 each for 59 cubes and 55 hp at 5000 rpm..With a little finagling a Homelite could be put in place of a Crosley..I have a low time Homelite just waiting for me to get to it..Of coarse it will overtax the Crosley clutch, trans and rear end but would be fun for a while..

  24. In Wednesday's TJJ Blog about Skip Hudson's 1929 A Roadster that the late Dan Gurney drove at Bonneville in 1950, @Tim asked if anyone knew of a Crosley that ran on the salt in '50 or '51.

I immediately thought of Howard Johansen's (GMC & Marmon powered) Crosley that ran at the 1951 meet.

It's obviously not the same Crosley that is now in @porknbeaner's stable ... but I'll post these pics anyway:

    Howard Johansen's #527 Crosley @ Bonneville '51 (1).jpg

  25. Again, not @porknbeaner's Crosley ... but in 1952 & 1953, Flint Michigan Speed Shop man Bill Waddill brought his Cadillac-powered Crosley to Bonneville:

Bill Wadill Crosley - Bville 1952.jpg
1952: With a 344ci Caddy, Bill ran 150.50 mph and took 1st place in Class D Competition Sedan

Bill Wadill Crosley - Bville 1953 .jpg
    1953: Waddill ran a disappointing 143.76 mph with a 274ci Cad (Class C)
... and could only muster 122.95 mph with the 344ci Cad (Class D) engine.

  26. Those are just too cool. I am sitting nearly in the back seat of mine and those you actually sit in the back seat. I am not sure that I could pull it off but it would be fun to drive mine out ( fun being a relative term here) and try for that 150 MPH club that the UTAH Timing Association puts on.

So is yellow the standard color for a Crosley?
Not sure that would be the color I would pick.
I tried for the 130 club but fell just short.
That running on salt ain't like running on pavement.

  30. Anything over about 120 or 130 is like driving on ice. The water in the salt turns to steam under your tires. Tall skinny tires is the name of the game.

Oh yellow and forest green ( like my doors) is what I have seen most on stockers. It may take a while because MOTATING is the first order of business but I think that can of beans will eventually be metallic gold and black. I got half a gallon of Metallic Gold Acrylic Lacquer (think '66 Grand Prix) and almost a gallon of Black Acrylic Lacquer. That could change if I happen onto another color. LOL
