I picked up a pair of 8BA's on the weekend from a fellow Hamber. I'm going to rebuild one of them. One has been rebuilt at sometime as its 60 over on the pistons, haven't taken the pan off of that one yet. The one I've decided to work on was covered in muck but looks like it had new water pumps and had the pan off recently. I've spent the last couple of days stripping it down. The rod and main bearings have hardly any wear but the pistons are covered in carbon. Also the lifter valley is full of gunk and there were a couple of sticking valves. There is however a full set of reground valves, springs and keepers that came with the engines. Whats the best way to clean up the pistons and get the muck out of the lifter valley. I've tried degreaser but it doesn't seem to be doing much. I'm planning on just a hone and rering at this point as its all in good condition. I've enclosed pictures of what it looks like so far. Alex
Have them pressure tested. For the price there could be several cracks. Not all the cracks can be seen by the eye.
I checked the compression and it was non existant on two of the cylinders due to the valves being stuck open. The block still had anti-freeze in it and it was all nice and clean.
Look at the date of the post!! I got rid of these a long time ago after my wife bought me a fully rebuilt Mercury Flathead with Offenhauser heads for Valentines day 2010. Sold the pistons and the rest I gave to a fellow Hamb member.
