yesterday i razored the entire original lacquer paint off my Buick, now i have a nasty chocolate brown Buick, what is the preferred method for priming over 59 year old lacquer?
strip it off and start over. todays urethane primers are better and make for a longer lasting and in my opinion a better looking job. theres a reason new car manufactures got away from it in the first place.
what he said plus never ever go over laquer with anything i razor them down as musch as i can then da with 80 the rest of it off.
how bout chemical strippers, not pole dancers on meth, aircraft remover, put some on the hood today and it took it to steel in no time. whats the procedure for priming after? thanks again kenny
I would stay away from chemicals, they have a habit of getting in seams and coming back to haunt you, no matter how much you neutralize it.
strip it.. i think the old adage is.."you can put lacquer over everything, but you cant put everything over lacquer".. if anyone else has heard that too... sure theres primers you can put down over the lacquer but why not just strip it and paint it BC/CC or soemthing else from the get go... instead of spending extra money
Strip it to metal with a D/A sander 80grit or by hand in the small areas. I like to put down Epoxy Primer next vs. 2K urethane. The epoxy primers have better adhesion and much better corosion protection. Just my thought.
Find someone with a plastic media blaster, you dont even have to take it apart,i media blast everything at my shop, dont take a chance of going over old primer,,,,,,,,
exactly my feelings i use soda blaster a lot but got to take it to him and it isn't cheap! best method vs. time/cost is a good old razor blade and a da.
Get the old laquer off as best you can. Best if you pull the windows and get it all out from around the window seams. I have seen it in the window channels reactivate with the new paint going over the top and blister around the windows where it couldnt be sanded out before painting.
