You pick up a beautiful vintage Poncho without a motor and trans. You shop around for a Pontiac motor and find the prices are pretty high nowadays. If you've got a 305 out of a 82 Firebird sitting around do you put it in the car? It is out of a Pontiac, but for all intents and purposes it is a Chevy. I say put it in and drive. What do you think?

It is your ride, if you like the 305, I say do it. But if it were mine, I would find a 350 if I were going to put a chevy mill in it...jmho But I am a Ford guy, what do I know...

    Nah.
You don't specify what is 'vintage' but there is no shortage of Pontiac engines. Since the only engine that will be a bolt-in is something close to the original, then all others will require some fussing so why not put your efforts into a 400-455? Otherwise you'll just have another belly-button swap. Yawn.

put the 305 and OD in it and enjoy. In the meantime, if it really means that much to you, find a '64 and up 389 and build it one piece at a time.

I put together a '49 Chevy tudoor a few years back and temp. used a small Olds V8 motor. Had a factory 389 tri power to put in it.
Ran and drove so nice I never changed it to the tri power.
    Cheers........

  8. I keep a couple spare Pontiac motors around just in case. But I've seen several hit the junkyard this summer, too. I guess it depends on the Pontiac - some, it's going to be more hassle to switch to the Chevy than it's probably worth.

yes, put it in and drive it, you already have it. You can always swap it when you find another engine
