We've been using Duplicolor grey high build primer in the aerosol can to spot in small areas/panels after the body work on the latest project. Kind of time to do a total body spray and we're wondering if anyone might know if this brand of rattle can primer is lacquer or enamel?

I know that you shouldn't spray lacquer over enamel as it will lift the enamel base. Before we pick up a quick quart of pre-mix primer, want to be sure that we're getting something that will be compatible with the Duplicolr that we've been using.

    Thanks !

I don't hear a lot of talk about this, but waterborne barrier primer is a good product to use if you're ever worried about reactions between various coatings. You can apply it over anything and then put anything over it. It's easy to use and it cleans up easily... it's water-based. You can get it in high fill and it sands easily.
I used it on a project years ago. Lacquer over enamel.
    No issues.

It is not the same lacquer primer it was years ago. I've been using SEM or Transtar primers lately, a bigger can at 15 ounces.

Thanks all. We just want to get a decent heavy coat of high build on the car after using up so many rattle cans and not really getting a decent result. Now that I know that the rattle cans are lacquer, I'll grab a quick quart of high build lacquer and have at it. After that a sealer, then the single stage enamel top coat. Weather is warming up, time to paint—

I spend way too much on my finishes to spray anything out of a can on them. Mix it, spray it and sleep well at night knowing your paint aint all bubbled up in the morning.
