yup, ran all 5 days without ever opening the hood. drove 1100 miles without checking the oil. I did add some water, and some stopleak, into the upper radiator hose.

Pure BAD ASS! The whole week never lifting the hood! Weren't you just a little curious to what was going on under there? Hat's off to you my friend and congratulations for surviving the whole week! Joe

thanks! I figured it wouldn't use too much oil, and I can see most of the engine from underneath anyways. The guy with the 9 second vette who got the award, probably couldn't see any of his engine, but he probably didn't need to.

Jim, it was nice meeting you Friday. I'd like to have visited with you more but I was hoping to get a better blower belt for the trip home. I'm happy to hear the one you had made it! I know there are lots of cool stories that go along with drag week but I think you gave HRM 4 pages worth of entertainment yourself!

I love drag week!! I've always wanted to do it. I will be doing this in my near future... Now I only need a drag car...

  17. So Jim if neither one of you opened the hood, what was the determining factor that made them give the award to the other guy?

    Probably.

Hot Rod mag is starting a new event called Drag Weekend, which starts in Tucson a the end of October. I'm signed up. We only drive as far as LA, but that itself will be kind of difficult...I don't know if you've ever driven in the traffic there, but it goes on for something like a hundred miles in all directions. It's nuts.

edit: 500 posts on this thread, 30k+ views...who'da thunk it?

Well I have driven in LA traffic, albeit almost 40 years ago! It's all that it's cracked up to be! I'm sure it will be very interesting to say the least! Joe

Tell us more about the drag weekend in Tucson & LA. Will there be a stop at Wild Horse pass motorsports park ( Firebird Raceway) in Phoenix? How many stops?

Just curious, have you done anything with the engine since you returned home?

I changed the oil, and pulled out the distributor to adjust the advance curve--it was coming on too early, and messing up the idle. I also sent an oil sample to a lab to see if there's anything scary going on inside. And I ordered a few new blower belts! plus I'm looking at what to do about the leaking radiator.

I also want to run a compression test and pull the valve covers to make sure everything looks happy in there.

Drag Weekend...goes to Wild Horse. Details at the link. Sign up, go have some fun!

Glad it went so well Jim. That oil sample is a damn good idea. Let us know how it comes out.
