@Lucius Molchany , Not arguing as "Greatest Song" is a personal opinion & I am too mourning the lost of one of the best folk singer/ song writers to ever live. The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald is not his best song, just his most played song. He has written & sung hundreds of quality songs. Here is my personal favorite! Others may have a different opinion. I saw Gordon 2 or 3 years ago @ the Northfield, Ohio Casino. Even at his advanced age, he put on a great show! Very personable when interacting with the audience. During a short break between songs, I yelled out my favorite song " Cherokee Bend" I was sitting close enough that he heard me. He smiled & pointed to me, but it was not on his set list. I feel blessed to have been able to see him before his p***ing. As a transporter who is on the road much of the time, I miss lots of stuff, but so glad I was in town to see his concert with a very good friend! I don't think my friend will ever understand when I bought his ticket & told him all he had to do is drive us to the show, that since I drive a thousand miles a day on my long trips......I just want to kick back & enjoy when I am home! I missed Richie Havens show @ the Winchester in Lakewood, Ohio after buying two tickets & unfortunately he p***ed away shortly after that show...I was heartbroken! I also missed Al Stewart's concert at the same venue after purchasing two tickets for it as well & NOT getting back in town in time to see it! Fortunately I had seen him @ the Odeon in the Flats (Cleveland, Ohio) the year before with Dave Mason & Jim Capaldi from Traffic. Such is the life of a transporter! Carefree highway is my pick.... My band plays Edmund Fitzgerald.... Great song as well. His deep cuts are all amazing, hell of a songwriter.
Big fan of Al's music!!! Much of which is not played on normal radio! His story telling from the time frame of "Between The Wars" is Amazing!!!! Songs like ...."On The Border" & "Lord Grenville" are amazing! Then he does a POP song like "Carol" that reminds me of my time as a bouncer/ doorman in a very popular dance club (circa 1986) !!! Seems not long ago but I saw Gordon 10 years ago. One of my favorites is "Did She Mention My Name?". He didn't always play it live but I got lucky and he opened the show with it. P.S. Not sure why he was mentioned but I finally got to see Al Stewart last year. I was a little disappointed he didn't play "Song on the Radio" but he played everything else.
