Great story and pics. There's something special about that rear view mirror view when towing home a new project. Can't stop looking back at it all the way home!

Great to hear the story.I love the car just as it is.I really like the wooden dash.I would just make it safe and drive it.I am building my car as an early seventies build.I think you will see a renewal of this era as most of us young old guys were just getting involed in this time period. No matter what you do the car looks great.

same kind of story - bought this 69 hemi Road Runner (a true "J" code hemi with no options) new in 69. Street raced for a summer then turned into a NHRA B/MP car - very competitive and close to record. Sold the car at end of 70 season (less driveline) and that gentleman kept it for 39 years until his unfortunate passing in 09. At a car cruise last Sept, and entirely by coincidence, my friend found out the car was still around (70 miles north of Pittsburgh where I live). That started a "quest" to locate (long story) and I wound up buying it back from his estate in Feb. of this year. We "renovated" the car mechanically and cosmetically (has original paint & only 7800 miles on odometer) and have shown at Mopar Nats and was a feature car at Chrysler's exhibit at the Woodward Dream Cruise. Car is a "time warp", pretty much untouched and still retains original and period perfect race car parts we installed back in 70 - even some original race lettering and 4" Keystone front wheels. Best of all, the same guys that I built it with back then, helped me again this time. My best friend said he'd kill me if I sold it - he's not doing this again in another 42 years! Look up article in Mopar Muscle, July 12 if interested. Will be feature car in edition going on news stand in late Nov. too. I love these stories (like the one above and the gentleman that owns the pizza company that tracked down his old Camaro from the early 70's) and can't believe I became one of them!

  18. I had some color slides of it but I can't find them. I think they are too embarrassed to show up.

  19. No, that car was Candy Apple red, absolutely beautiful car. Butch Winsett owned it. He was a really great painter I think for Rods Custom but I may be mistaken on where he worked. He stopped painting when his eyes got bad he told me. I haven't seen his car in many years and have lost touch with him.His car was much nicer than mine at the time.
Mine was painted a Champagne color body with Maroon fenders back then, typical of late 70s early eighty's styling. I didn't really drive it too long before I took it all back apart to improve all the mistakes I made the first time.

Way cool story! I think the dash is fine and considering the history it should stay. I haven't gotten rid of anything I regret, but I'd like to have my family's 57 Tbird and 59 El Camino that were sold.

Fan-fucking-tastic! Serendipity for sure. Absolutely beautiful story. And Don, as a guy who came of age in the'70s (graduated h.s. '71), I can vouch for how cool that dash would have been back in the day. Kudos brother.
