Since we had decided to fly down together from Detroit my adventure began Wednesday night after work when I drove up to Denise’s house. We had our normal girl chat with pizza and HAMB surfing but knew we had to get to bed. We had 4 big days ahead! We woke up Thursday a.m. WAY too early to catch our plane. It was just boarding when we got to the gate. Denise considered us to be there ‘perfect time’ I considered us to be LATE! Luckily though we made it on with no problems and had no problems changing planes in Chi-town.
She had made arrangements for her non-car pal Amanda to pick us up at the airport. As we were standing on the curb waiting for Amanda we saw the Crushproof truck circle by. It wasn’t too long before Lux was parked and welcoming us to Austin!
Soon after that Amanda and her adorable son Ryan picked us up at the gate and we headed downtown to check into the Austin Motel.
Kind of caught the welcome sign…
    [IMG]
This was my first trip to Austin so I was really excited to see what the area looked liked. My first glance at the world famous Continental Club
    [IMG]
So we checked into our hotel, left our bags in the lobby and headed out to Reggie’s to get the party started! I was worried we were early but there were already cars waiting when we pulled in.
Ryan was pretty excited to see the cars and kept his mom busy chasing him. I think we may have a future Austin hot rodder on our hands!
As more and more cars arrived it got a little dangerous for Ryan so we bid him and his mom goodbye and thanked them for the lift to the BBQ.
Of course we got right down to business and had some BBQ.
Before too many people came I had a chance to look around the shop and from the looks of it Reggie will stay busy for awhile…

Pretty soon friends from near and far began arriving weary from the road and ready for some real Texas BBQ.

Before too long the Dirty’s came in with Rusty’s ’32 in tow. Of course as you can imagine Denise and Danyelle had a big reunion…
    [IMG]

And then the thrash to fix Rusty’s driveshaft began…
    [IMG]

The Dirty Little Midget (tm :D) took on the supervisor role and sat back to enjoy the BBQ!

Oh yeah, and there were some cars there too…
    [IMG]

Casey’s coupe (nice to finally meet you! :D)

Mark55’s wagon (you’re right, I do LOVE it!)

Slick50 and DeVille Gal (Ken and Vicki)’s Caddy
    [IMG]

3dnSouth’s roadster. Great car with a great story. In case you missed the story:

    Blake’s coupe

    BobK and Maggie’s Chevy
    [IMG]

Plus many, many others. I heard a count at one point of over 100!

After we all had our fill of BBQ we headed over to Billy of the Thunderbolts house for their weekly installment of ‘Thirsty Thursday’. There were already lots of cars there when we arrived.

His home is in a residential area. Cars lined the streets for blocks!

    A neat Chevy

Just as we were about to leave to find more BBQ someone told us they were bringing more BBQ there. So we stayed put and had another delicious BBQ dinner. I think the same man cooked for both Reggie’s BBQ and Thirsty Thursday. Either way, it was yummy! As we were resting on Brokenspoke’s bumper someone noticed a TON of nuts laying around. Low and behold we were sitting under a pecan tree! While some may think last year’s crops are junk Tanya “the nutcracker” showed us otherwise!

Malcom’s Uncle John, Kathy (Kisam), Tanya and Mr. BBQ
    [IMG]

I was hungry for some dessert so I headed over to Malcom’s roof. It looks good enough to eat LOL
    [IMG]

*I was in metalflake withdrawal. I missed my Chevy :D*

After we once again had our fill of BBQ (and pecans!) we decided as a group to check out the Austin Speed Shop before the madness of the LSR weekend began there. A few carloads of us headed over to see where the Fat Lucky magic happens!

Some of us arrived in style, some of us relived our ride in the 80s :D…
    [IMG]

So much for beating the rush. When we got there nearly every corner hosted some type of thrash for the Round up whether it be interior, paint, fabrication or engine. Everyone was busy, the place was bustling with excitement!

    Some projects in the works

JohnJoyo’s new coupe. While I was there it took off on it what I believe was its maiden voyage. I heard it was a field car not too awful long ago. I’m sure John will take great car of it.

But of course throughout the party around him FatLucky stayed busy as usual. Does this guy ever get a break?

While we were there Skratch pinstriped Ken and Vicki’s Caddy. Very tasteful, looks great!

For some this would have been hot rod overload for one day but we trudged on. Time to hit Congress to see the cars in action!

There were quite a few cars cruising and parked. After enjoying some delicious Amy’s Ice Cream we decided to check out the art show above the Continental Club. The show featured a few artists that we all know and love- VonFranco, Dennis McPhail, Keith Weesner, Jeff Norwell, Rod Powell and photography by Juan from Deadend Magazine.
There was A LOT of stuff there I wanted to buy…

They had a nice bar there. It was a perfect ending to a perfect first LSR day!

    Day 2—Friday
We had made arrangements to be picked up for the garage crawl at 7:15am. Anyone that knows us knows that is WAY too early for both us. It hardly seemed like I had even laid my head on the pillow when the alarm rang! Leaving the hotel we were met with gray skies and a bit of a misty rain. It was really warm though. It wasn’t even light yet! Denise decided to ride with Brokenspoke (Bill) and I rode with Malcom and Uncle John.

Big Ken followed us the ½ hour drive or so to meet up the rest of the crew at the Cracker Barrel.
See, I told you it wasn’t even light yet!

The early birds were finishing up their breakfast just as we arrived.

By this time the rain had really started pouring down. Plus it got cold and windy. I thought it was warm in Texas? Our first stop on the route was Cimtex Rods in Jarrell. Two brothers run this top shop and are turning out some awesome hot rods. I’m sure many of you will remember the ’57 Olds wagon that was named Rod and Custom Rod of the year. It is also on the cover of the latest Summit catalog.

They had a lot of projects cooking from mild to wild. Convertibles, truck, racecars, they’ve got it all!

We took a minute (at Denise’s urging :D) to pose for a hokey ass group shot
    [IMG]

After a nice tour of the world class shop and more visiting with friends it was time to hit the road to the next stop. I decided to see what my truck will ride like when I finally take the time to finish it so I rode with Jerry. Thanks for the lift!

The next stop on the tour was Bill Ward’s shop. Bill is a member of the same club as Mark (who set up the crawl), the Donut Gang (check out their website—www.donutgang.com). Bill recently converted a horse barn into a car lover’s paradise. Words don’t describe how cool this place is. And no, you don’t smell anything anymore!

Even a nice little apartment area with a kitchen area and a sitting room. I hope he calls me if they are ever looking for a tenant!

    Cool art
    [IMG]

I could have stayed there but alas there were more places to see. By this time the crawl had gathered 20 cars plus! A few of the fine rides crawling that morning

I really liked this slammed Chevy, it was on the garage crawl as well.

There were lots of neat cars parked around Charlie’s shop. Some belonged to fellow crawlers, others to employees of the shop.

This Merc belonged to one of the Fenderskirt gals. It was sweet!

As the wind raged on we rounded up ourselves to head to our last stop, Bodylines. Thomas and the guys had some neat completed projects for us to check out.

By this time it was lunch time and of course per usual there was BBQ on the brain. Mark suggested we try Rudy’s so most of us headed in mass that direction. I think this place is as BBQ as one can get. You have to order your cooked meat by the pound and the way it is cooked.

I must have done ok ordering though, mine was pretty good. (well as good as BBQ can be for the 3rd meal in a row!)

Everyone enjoyed each other’s company at the giant picnic tables
    [IMG]

This sign on the side of the restaurant is for Jerry
    [IMG]

As a car lover I have a collection of odd car photos. Not necessarily odd cars but more along the lines of odd things people do to cars. Well, in the parking lot I got to add another photo to the collection.

Yes folks, that’s rhino-liner, line-x, tough stuff—call it what you want but it is spray in bed liner all over a Yukon. Talk about protecting you car’s finish! Uncle John can tell you how it feels. He must have touched every panel in disbelief!

About that time everyone decided to head over to the expo center to check out what was going on. We passed a few cars on the way there but lots still remained there. All of the vendors were set up in the tree lined area, the swap was in full swing and the zing of mini-bikes echoed throughout the grounds. The mini-bike races rocked. I wish I could have stuffed one in my suitcase I would have so been out there.

Unfortunately I just caught the tail end of the action. I may have to drive a car down next year just so I can bring a mini bike! :D

While we were walking around the swap meet and stage some people had mentioned seeing Big Olds there which kind of was puzzling to us. Turns out they were referring to this car, the Big Olds imposter! :D

There were a number of neat cars parked up on the hill.

Jeff’s (finkd) Caddy— it was nice to finally see this car in person after drooling over it on the HAMB. He had it parked off Congress one night in a pretty dark parking lot with all the interior lights on…wow!

It has nice subtle flake on the roof and the edge of the fins. Kustom perfection!

This nice little Kustom was for sale. It belongs to HAMBer Buzzard's wife
    [IMG]

Speaking of HAMBers there were some of them standing around too!
Jerry, Tinman (good to see you again!) and his friend Travis
    [IMG]

    Rod Powell and Mercury Charlie
    [IMG]

The sun setting was our clue it was time to get back to Congress to check out the action there. There were tons of cars parked and cruising from mild to wild- hot rods, customs and Vdubs!

I wanted some GOOD Mexican so Malcom, Uncle John and I waited in the long line for Gueros.

A line is never long though with good beer, good cars cruising, good music and good friends!

After a delish dinner of Mexican WAY different than Ohio Mexican (ha ha ha) it was back to Congress to check out the nighttime antics already in progress. Walking the street we ran into lots of HAMBers.

For those of you who have never been, from what I understand Austin has quite a strict open container law on the streets. I heard of quite a few people having to pour their beer out for the APD. Relative to that I fact I present you with the first place winner in the most creative category of how to carry beer on Congress:
“Honest officer, I’m really going fishin’!”

By this time it was getting late and some people were even sleeping! (she parties pretty hard for a kindergartener though! :D)

With the Round Up less than 12 hours away people were starting to hit the hay. And let’s face it, when D.W. and Laura leave the party must be over! :D

    Laura ready for lift off!

Day 3—Ready for the Round Up!
We awoke to sunshine and blue skies, the perfect day for a car show! We rode over with Malcom and parked in HAMB row which had been set up thanks to Brokenspoke (who left for the Round Up just after I went to bed! :D). First on the agenda was to visit the vendors that I may have missed the day before. Word to the wise, when attending the Round up bring a pocket full of cash. I have never wanted to buy so much stuff in my entire life! You name it- art, t-shirts, music, jewelry- they got it all! The vendor area is set up in a group of trees making it nice and comfortable to shop, shop and shop some more!
Walking thru the vendors we of course ran into a lot of fellow HAMBers…

Pretty soon it was time for the Meet and Greet so we headed over to the usual spot
    [IMG]

It filled up with people quick. Thank goodness for nametags, there were tons of new people for me to meet! Here are just a few of the many HAMBers in attendance…

And what would a meet and greet be without a hokey ass group shot?

Earlier in the weekend I had promised Danyelle we would have nail time sometime. She is growing up so fast I just can’t believe it! So after the meet and greet we retreated to the HAMB camp for some glittery girl time! It was so good to see you sweetie!

It was smoking hot that day so there was some drinking required. Good think DeVille Gal was on top of her game and brought along her gas powered blender! Now THERE is a good time!

Well more of a good time for girls than guys maybe ;) ;)

Jerry added to the fun with his own special blends…
    [IMG]

After getting our beverages of choice we set out to see some cars. Afterall, we were at a car show! Just about that time Reggie rode by in his latest acquisition and we hopped on board.

There were lots of neat cars there. Ok, that’s a pretty generic statement but it’s the truth! In Ohio we have a handful of traditional rods and kustoms mixed in with a whole bunch of easter eggs. Not the case at the Round Up, no sireee!

This is just a small sampling of some of the neat stuff. I felt like I took a picture about every other spot!

In addition to all of the cool cars, bands and swag at the Round Up the Continentals gave us car guys and gals one more special treat, CACKLEFESTS! Denise and I had been over to watch the mid afternoon show. While we were there we got talking with the Scorpion crew and they asked Denise if she wanted to fire up and ‘pilot’ the Scorpion during the final Cacklefest of the day. Um, yeah. That took a lot of thought!

First order of business, try on the mask! (I think she has a little Mexican wrestler in her!)

How cool was that? My ears were ringing, my throat was burning, my eyes were watering, I LOVED it! And I KNOW Denise loved it too! I was so busy taping I forgot to take pictures when she got out and did her chamption pose! I’m not a good photographer!

Thanks so much for bringing the Scorpion out. It was definitely a highlight of my trip! Guys out in HAMBland--- if you are anywhere near a Cacklefest and you don’t go you are really missing out! To hear, smell and see these old drag cars fire up is really something special. Thanks Scorpion crew for the memory, her nor I will ever forget!

Lowandslow63 decided to try it out after we pried Denise out…
    [IMG]

Well, what to do after firing the Scorpion, hmmmm…not much to top that! Better head back to Congress for some Homeslice Pizza! Before we did that we had to stop at the HAMB tent and say hello to Marcie. I know she is probably going to kill me and I will probably be banned from the HAMB forever but I have to post this picture of her adorable little tummy with a hot rodder inside!

Congrats, congrats, congrats! I wish nothing but the best for you and Ryan on your new bundle of joy! We will miss you at the Cinematic!

After we finished our pizza we decided to cruise over to the ASS party to see if there was even a place to park. We all figured it would be super crowded. So we piled in the Galaxie and headed over. We were able to find a parking spot across the street. They had hot rods they had selected from the show parked up around the building.

Despite the good company and the good times we were all ready to cruise back over to Congress. On our way out we saw this Galaxie. It is awesome. I know Lux did a lot of work on it and Fat Lucky did the interior. I’m not sure if the owner is a HAMBer or not…
    [IMG]

He needed a little jolt to get it started so Malcom saved the day! A kustom Galaxie jumping a kustom Galaxie, there’s something you don’t see everyday!

Back over on Congress the line to cruise was unbelievable! I’ve never been to Woodward Dream Cruise but I imagine it is just as bad. But stopping in traffic is half the fun, right?

While cruising we saw this poor guy from New Orleans. I guess some guy in a daily on a cellphone hit him on the way out of the show. He said it was his only car so he definitely planned to fix it, ouch! Turns out it was HAMBer 'tk2leadsled'- Thomas
    [IMG]

No, there weren’t too many but there were a few rat rods. I don’t want to start a rat rod debate but just tell a story….
I always got a kick out of Slick50’s signature line that quoted Mike Zenor saying “If I was a rat rodder I’d drive up to the other rat rodders and say ‘How’s the rat rodding going?’ ” Everytime I read it I chuckle. So there we are on Congress right next to a rat rodder. So I just HAD to ask the guy how the rat rodding was going. He gave me a big old grin, bounced around in his seat a little and said “great!”. Never knowing why 6 people were hysterically laughing. Denise was able to get a prime shot of the car in an even primer location…
    [IMG]

So thank you Slick50, thank you Mike Zenor and thank you whoever you told me you stole the quote from. I think my sides still hurt! :D

All good things must come to an end and so ended Saturday, the day of the Round Up. Granted some people didn’t end til 5am, it still had to come to an end! I kept hearing burnouts, who was in charge of Casey? :D

Day 4—Cruise to Ski Shores, Flyrite Choppers and home :(
We piled our luggage into Ken and Vicki’s Caddy and checked out of the Austin Motel. We did the traditional thing and waited in line at Joe’s for a little breakfast. Denise decided she wanted a Mountian Dew so Casey generously offered her to take her down to the gas station down the street. I think that ‘pass’ was titled the “10 second Mountain Dew’
    [IMG]

There were already tons of cars starting to line up for the cruise to the lake. We jumped in Ken and Vicki’s Caddy and fell in line behind El Jefe in the Black Dahlia. Pretty soon we arrived at our desitination, Ski Shores Café.

For those that have never been, it is neat little restaurant right on the lake. You can get there by boat or car. They had special parking allotted for all of the hot rods on the cruise.

After everyone had a chance to eat and enjoy the music it was time to head over to Flyrite Choppers. I hopped back in the Caddy with Vicki and Ken, Denise rode with Casey in the coupe.

After a quick walk around it was time for us to hit the road. Our chariot picked us up and whisked us off to the airport to return back to the cold north. Thanks so much for Ken and Vicki (and everyone else!) for shuttling us around. We’ll see you at the Cinematic!

And so ended a perfect trip to the 2008 Lonestar Round Up. It was my first but it definitely won’t be my last!

Extra thanks to Brokenspoke (Bill) for hookin’ us up with a room at the penis motel… I mean the Austin Motel. We owe you LOTS of cookies, you rock!

Photo credits to my friend Thelma (Denise). Another fun trip. Let’s do it again :D
Next time though, you do the post! :D I had no idea they were THIS much WORK!

That would be "Richard D" - The one armed mechanic, (due to the fact that he will not put down his beer). Nor will he leave your home as long as there is beer in the fridge. Don't ask me how I know? Great write up Meagan!
