Should an external cooler be installed? The trans guy says here in the az heat w/out one your tranny will have a short life .TRUE???Since i have to rebuild the trans, just wondering if this is BS or cheap insurance .

  2. Hey Scoot-
I would definately run a cooler on that 400, They're cheap enough and fairly easy to install. Some guys will even mount them under the car next to the trans so they don't have a bunch of hose all over the place. Rocks can be a problem though.

My daily driver is a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it has over 150K on it. The guy at the trans shop said that he routinely replaces these Chrysler AODs at 70K. My Jeep came with a trans cooler and I believe that it has saved me BIG bucks in transmission rebuilds. Every car I own now has a trans cooler....

Shit yeah. I never did put one on my 700R4, but it was off the road by July anyway.
Just look at your engine temp needle difference from December to July. Mine was a 30 degree difference. Just from outside temps.

Keep in mind that the tranny cooler will also mean that the tranny will take longer to get to operating temp. So keep a leash on your right foot until its warmed up a bit.

Scott, if you go over to Industrial Chassis, check out the little tranny cooler on Steve's father's coupe. Pretty slick, and you don't lose any air to the radiator and it doesn't take up any room.

I live at the opposite end of the world from you and I run a extra trans cooler on everything.

some trans guys will tell you to run a cooler in the bottom of the radiator as well as an exturnal.

the idea being that the cooler in the radiator will help warm the fluid in the trans at startup and the exturnal will help cool the fluid after its hot.

    good luck
