Like many parts of the country, there has always been a strong and direct connection between hot rods and racing, be it drag racing or circle track racing. In both cases it would be guys working on their cars after work all week to get out on the weekend. There is a long list of New England drivers that I would follow around to tracks that are no more that became nationally known. This week two of them passed. Bugsy Stevens and Bob McCreadie.
Although I have always lived in Washington state or Texas those are two names I remember from way back when you read about races in a few of the magazines months after the race happened.
Barefoot Bob was from Watertown NY and ran mainly dirt tracks. I saw him run in many a race up state NY. I regret that I may have only seen Bugsy run a couple of times. IIRC once in an All Star race at Islip around 1979.
