That's ace Mart. But swapping a 21stud to a 24 then dropping one head off it makes ****** all sense to me haha. Why did you need to remove the head mate? I thought she was running good after you dropped it in there.

Yep, I used to work for a rental company maintaining those, had an engine head on one side and a compressor head on the other. worked extremely well for powering jackhammers etc,

    Cool.

I've often though about doing that very same thing.

    Neat to watch the valves.

Pull the hose from the pump, plug the intake ports, and drive it :)

  6. I played the video for an expert Small-Block Chev Engine Builder !! He knew all about this as he told me "Yeah, He's just got the VALVE COVER OFF and He's ADJUSTING THE VALVES" I still can't stop laughing !!! >>>>.

The guys here at work (Chevy Dealer) got a kick out of me pulling half the plugs off my flatty while it was running. Pretty cool little engines.

There is some old air compressors at 1 yard I go to that are 21 stud flathead 8's that run on 4 cylinders and the other 4 are for air. They are not all on the same bank though. They alternate. It is definitely a factory design too. I'll see if I can find some pics.

That makes sense, Matt, If I remember correctly, to get 4 even firing cylinders on a V8 you need to run the outer two cyls on one bank and the inner two on the other. - Like the inlet manifolds are divided.

How to make a blown 4 banger from a V8

Raise the compression in four of the cylinders, feed them with gasfree air, disconnect their spark and lead the exhaust over to the other four live cylinders......
    Voila.... a supercharged fourcylinder!! :)

Hmm... You would probably need to make a new camshaft that makes the blowercylinders lobes open double, giving compression on every stroke....

I just noticed the big sparks jumping off one of the HT leads.

There's a motorcycle design that does this already.

Sorry, I skipped a bunch of this thread...

Flattys were converted to many things...but for a compressor they would usually block out the middle 2 on each side. It would run on the outer 4 and compress on the inner 4. They look wild!

Did something similar to that after a head gasket swap on a small block ford....we started it up but forgot to install the rocker ***embly on once head. It ran...kind of.

:D IIRC,there was an article in Popular Mechanics,Mechanics Illustrated or Mother Earth News that had a set of plans to make an air compressor out of a SB Ford.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.
