Hey Guys, Just a query, ive recently bought a 1930 Model A coupe with a flathead 59a engine. The car had been sitting for a long time before i purchased as it was a deceased estate. The shop i took it to to get checked over before purchase said the when sitting fuel was leaking through the carbs and their solution was to install a tap in the engine bay to turn off everytime the car was not running. My question is i know with a model A using the standard fuel tank its gravity feeding to the carbs, is this really necessary to have a tap when it was never there before and ive just rebuilt the carbs and installed a new mechanical fuel pump. ( I havent started it up again yet since rebuilding the carb and new fuel pump Thanks for your suggestions
Really necessary? Probably not, but a worthwhile thing to have, especially if its already there. Useful security device too. Chris
Model A’s already have a tap installed under the tank. Factory stock. I would say that was/is a necessity due to the gravity feeding system
I’m assuming you’re using the stock tank, in that case I would say yes, and put it back where Ford had it, directly under the tank. I know the sure fire way to tell if I haven’t closed it on my stock A is the small of gas in the garage.
Sounds like a good idea. I just wonder how much pressure would effect the carbs on a gravity feed Model A tank? 2-4 lbs?
Thanks for the replys, the original tap on the tank has been removed at sone point time, i think i will just buy a new one of them abd reinstall in the original position. Thanks
