[IMG]I have a 29 special coupe on 32 rails that my wife insists I don't paint until we enjoy it a few years. I have it on a pinched 32 chassis from Squeak Bell and I am thinking about painting the frame and components in a chassis black. Should I go through the trouble or just leave it bare for the first year? The car was originally Washington Blue, but I wanted to paint the frame black. My thoughts[IMG] were to go ahead and paint the interior, frame, and undersides just to protect them. I am wondering if it really matters, they have made it 80+ years and we live in AZ.....Opinions?????

The chassis would look nice in gloss black. If you insist on leaving it bare, at least protect it with some WD40 or Gibbs.

Well, if you don't mind the body rusting, why not let the frame do the same?

Do you want to clean the rust off later is the real question

No rush investing in a paint job right away. You may want to work out some body rubs (like the doors, trunk) before painting it to avoid touch ups in the future.

Paint it now or you will have fun cleaning the rust out of every nook and crany later.

That was my thinking, I really would rather paint the frame and nooks and crannys now. I just was wanting to get her going, then work on the chop, etc. I was concerned about messing the fresh paint up with my ongoing body work....It would probably be easier to touch up or re-paint than to fight rust. Thanks

Thanks for the confusion, LOL! No, not much rust out here....frame has been bare in the garage for 4 years and little if any rust....but I do plan on driving it a lot, we have cruise nights every night of the week all year....And to think I was hating it here earlier, but now AZ sounds so good!

Ha! Ha!!, the last thing I ever do is anything to impress anyone....I do what I want. But it does suck that I've had a dream of a traditional rod for 25+ years and now everyone that hears my plan says "oh, you're building a rat rod". I hate that.

Paint it. A bare metal frame with a painted car (even a patina'd body) just looks like laziness rolling down the road...;)

my wife insists I don't paint

didn't anyone read the whole post?

why ignore the boss and risk a disagrement?

    I am an expert,ask my ex-wives

  21. Paint it silver and don't tell her. She'll think it's bare metal.

Don't think that would work....we are talking about a girl that will call and leave a voice mail of a good sounding car at a gas station and ask "can you guess the car?". She also talked me into the 32 frame, she keeps saying "if your gonna do it do it exactly how you want". She just thinks the old paint on the body looks neat and I have to agree.

  23. I love a "patina" body but nothing makes it look better than contrasting it with a detailed frame and engine.

My body has original patina, with a gloss black detailed frame, I like it.

If you paint the motor and wheels and every other metal part on the car but the body ,you have to paint it. Why wouldn't you? I understand leaving the body as is but paint the frame or it will look hack.

Thanks for all of the replies. Time to start studying paint. New question--Future plans call for the body to be matte Washington Blue. I'm thinking the black frame would look more original, but then again it might look odd not being body color. If I painted the frame blue, it would be gloss with the axles, etc black. Jeez, I need to be out welding on my frame and here I am keyboard rodding LOL! Thanks again
