I just came from a friends shop, and he'd just finished a "Flake helmet with fish scales and some panels. AMAZING! This was real big when i was younger and either it faded from me, or me from it. Anyway, it seems that "Flake's gaining in popularity these last few years. So, long story longer, a little less than 3 yrs ago i met a few artists/painters and have noticed in this short time their talents have grown exponentially and maybe need a little recognition, or more than they've gotten already. This is an opinion, but their work's grown so much in such a short time. They are (not in any order): Donnie (Imperial Customs-Lownslow), "Nicoteen", and Harpoon. This has been a public service announcement
I've noticed it making a big comeback. too. I've laways liked it when it's used right. And speaking of flake....Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth is still in business through his son, Lil' Daddy Roth!! Great selection and good prices. Check out the names! www.rothmetalflake.com Dave
very true GROUCHO! i've seen alot of their work and have seen their talent grow, cool stuff keeps turning into even COOLER stuff!!! keep up the good work guys! i had Harpoon for a welding class a few years ago and never even knew it was the Harpoon. Had i realized it was him i woulda bugged him for some tips on pinstriping!!! live and learn...
I did my first flake paint job when I was 18 back in '77, it was shit, total garbage but I was proud of it. Flake's in my blood, it never left, if you were a teenager in the '70s it was allabout paint. Here's the air cleaner I built for my bike outta sheet steel.
I remember seeing the roof on Donnie's Buick for the first time a few years ago at one of the "Fuck the Blessings". I was pretty damn impressed.
Why does flake look so good on a car and so bad on a bass boat? I think some of the resurgence has to do with the "sliding scale" of nostalgia. As we all get older, what was popular when we were kids comes back into vogue. I remember seeing flaked cars when I was but a wee lad, then it was endless stripe panels, then the van thing hit... God help us on that one...
Any issues with Old School Flake or Roth? (Ive only used HoK) How does the flake hold up in UV? I'd hate to have pink flake on red in a couple years.
Used to be a guy from Nor Cal way back when. Used to call himself the MetalFlake Man (or somnething). Whatever happened to that guy? Is he working on another car to show the young whipper snappers how it's done? Hmmmm... I wonder?
harpoon did my trunk lid last year in pin striping as a suprise it was freaking awsome i love it i know a couple of guys that have had him flake stuf up here in the great north west
I used Old School Flake on my dash and paintable wheels and had no problems or regrets with the way they applied and look after the job was done.
I try Slowly but surely (pearls and small flakes) Call me 'low budget'....but for now, that's all I can afford. Smooth and glittery.
donnie, nick, carlos,& harpoon have been ruling flake for awhile now. here are 2 of my flake experiments.
