heres some old shots my buddy found of his friends #134 fuel coupe. My buddy built the engine for him, the owner ran it on 75% nitro and did 1/8 mie smoke runs. don't know what ever happened to the car but these pics were from 1987. taken in glenside Pa.
Everything about that car is perfect! If only I had the means to replicate it for the street!!!! And if I had the means I'd ask Garlits if I could get in the museum and tape measure the snot out of the equally wonderful and first MFJF 554 coupe he has on display. Both cars are shivers up the spine for lil ole meeeee. -85% jimmy
I like it too. If the photo is 87 it more than likely is still around unless some genius decided it is a good candidate for a Ridler style redo. Hope not-Jim
I stared at the pictures for 30 minutes just taking in all the hippness of this great little fuel coupe. You are very kind to share!!!Art's coupe is really a tasty hot rod as well. Thanks again-Sololobo
32 for me.........Tell us all about it and don't leave anything out! I probably saw you run it at Fremont, back when it would fry the tires for the full 1/4 mile. Man, that was a beautiful sight! Would that have been you? How about some pictures of before and during the restoration. Thanks!
I don't have any pictures of when I restored it. But I have some great video. We toured all over the country, If you were at Fremont I am sure I was driving. Probably the most the runs that meant the most to me was racing the Freight Train. They were such fierce competitors in the early 60's. I have those races on video. Kenny Youngblood always talked about making a poster of that race. The whole screen is filled with smoke, I am in the left lane and the camera man is in the right lane. I am completely sideways and still in it heading right for the Freight Train, I will never forget it. I wish I new how to put that race here I think everyone interested in this stuff would get a kick out of it. Anyway I straightened it out got back in it and went sideways again in the lights smoking the tires the full quarter mile! What a ride. I think that was at Baylands Raceway in Sacramento. Another good one was at Indianapolis, the people just loved to watch that car. I could go on and on, it was just a blast.
I saw it run at the NDRA nostalgiia drags in the 80's. I thought it had just been restored at that point. It was putting on a good smoke show the first couple of times I saw it and then someone changed the clutch setup or something because it stopped doing that. Champion Speed Shop twin engine dragster also put on some awesome smoke shows at those races. Looks like the 80's were the good old days for me.....bummer.
Thanks for making my day! Perfect!!! That's the stuff that inspires me to get out in the shop in this nasty weather...I was lucky enough to crew/drive the 7-11 coupe for a couple seasons (and survive). But I hardly feel worthy of stumbling into this thread! Thanks guys...
I am almost positive that I saw this same car on that other auction site about three+ years ago. It was in the North West, I believe Wash. or Oregon at that time. I spoke to the seller, he didn't know much about it but did get fired it up during auction. Bid went to about $14,000.00 or more and I think auction ended early, but maybe not. I specifically remember that grille insert. Maybe someone in the NW can tell where it is now.
Kiwi Kev - God bless you (I said I wasn't gonna cry)...BTW, I drove the 7-11 when it was a real hot rod - before they dolled it up in that candyass get-up. Actually, it looks pretty good. All the cars shown here look great. Thanks again...
Dam what a great thread My 2nd favor car is the 34 [ 55 chevy is 1st ] Great looking car. They were so much fun to watch. Would be fun to bring one on the street. Acechev55
Whos car is that? I'm only a few miles from Glenside. Do they call them 1/8 miles smoke runs beucase of who built the motor? (Jk had to take that jab.) Chris
