points give you a warning before they strand you
with any of the electronic replacement systems you need to carry all the items in that system as spares>thats not a cheap fix<

Check with your local parts stores or sears...they should be able to sell you a dwell meter.

Hide a msd box on the car and use the points to turn the box on and off. They are now a switch and will last a long time

    MSD box comes with instructions
find a friend to help you
take it to a hi school shop class
MSD instructions also come with trouble shooting instructions >if you have trouble with box easy to just change wire hook up to by pass box
Already mentioned add good ground wires >you can never have too many good grounds<

Beats me how we got to this point. The parts you bought cost more than a good set up contact point distributor with proper advance in it.
The computer unit wont run very well with out any advance....your engine ( whatever condition) needs about 34 degrees of advance , TBI control module will give ya maybe 6-10 depending on the control module etc.
    Why not fix it right???
Ya got me so confused i will give ya a good working distributor curved and set up on a machine just to make it right.....???????? Send me your shipping info............

This could qualify for the worse thread ever ???????

put a Mallory dist in my A in 1967 with a transisterized box of some kind to take work away from points>started using a MSD box when they became available> recently got a 'new in box' same model dist installed it even tho the 40 year old dist was still fine>

he asked for experience / help & ignored the answers ???

Well, as they say you can lead a horse to water but you damned well can't force him to drink if he doesn't want to.

Lorodz first you need to actually learn how a car/engine works before you can successfully work on it.

    1. Is learning the basics of how the ignition system works. As several have said, a point style system is very simple in the way it works and it is usually very easy to trouble shoot.
    2. Dewll meters aren't too expensive and you can find one at most auto parts stores or Sears or online. Here is one for 35bucks that is a tach and dwell meter.

It is simple to use, you set it on the correct number of cylinders. hook the hot lead to the post of the coil that the distributor lead connects to and the ground lead to ground. Fire up the engine and check the reading on the meter and compare that to specs. Chev V8's with single points usually call for 28-32 Degrees of dwell. 30 being desired for general driving. If you have the cap with the window to stick the allen wrench or adjusting tool in you take your tool and adjust the points while the engine is running.

    3. As for those junk distributors that your buddy gave you, they take too much additional stuff to make them work right and are just flat of no use to you free or not.

    4. There is plenty of information floating around on how to do basic tune up work on engines. I'm not talking about the stuff in Engine masters on how to get 900 hp out of a 383 stroker but the stuff that tells you how a point type ignition works and how to set it and diagnose it. Even the Automechanics for Dummys books have that.

  22. I saw the kit at the local oreilleys... I think it was either msd or petronix....
