I have a NOS module for my old SUN, and it had an old 1.35v battery in there that was original. My question is , will a new style aa 1.5 battery work? Or possibly a Nicad as they are usually about 1.35 volts? Sorry if this has been covered before, didn't find much with a search, and TIA...
Thanks Bob, are they rechargeable? I was kind thinking of adding an external battery holder, so it would be more accessible? Any thoughts?...
There were a few good threads just search for sun tach. I've been running the same AA batteries in mine for a few years now. I just take them out in the winter no need for rechargeables. I don't think it's as accurate as a new tach, but I don't know if it's from the age or the batteries or both. I only had about $15 tied up in mine so I figured worst case I blow it up and have to send it out anyway.

No they are not. They last a long time obviously. The real early Sun modules had a waferlike wierd battery that was hard wired in. It had to be unsolderd to be removed. These went bad and ruined the whole unit with corrosion like you wouldn't believe. Most of them use the replaceable battery. I also believe that they are not the most accurate tach . Probably why most serious comp cars, boats ect ran mechanical tachs back then.
This is what I have and was really wanting to run it on the Lakes Roadster, as you can see my module is brand new. No corrosion inside, and hoping to run the new style batteries and everything works in it... what do y'all think?...
Dawg, Your Sun tach is a model D which dates it from 1946-1952 or 53. Mine is identical (red lettering and all) and is stamped 1-50 (January 1950). I believe the tachs with the red numerals pre-date the tachs with white numerals, but I have studied too few samples to be 100% sure. The transmitter you have is an EB-7A which dates from the early to mid-60's. If you want a period correct transmitter, look for a model E which uses a D cell battery, or a model EB with post terminals and a riveted-on tag. Here's a photo of my model D-3 tach and E transmitter; Come to think of it, I may have a correct mid-50's EB-9 (12v 8cyl) transmitter that might work for you...will see if I can dig it up.
Here it is; Riveted-on chrome/enamel tag Electrical connection posts Dated January 1956 Not sure if you're interested, but I have no use for this transmitter. PM me if you're interested, maybe we can work a deal.
Nope. Won't work worth a poop. I guess it depends if you want your tach to be accurate or to just move when your engine goes "vroom-vroom". If you want it to be accurate, here is an email I received when asking for mercury batteries for my EB9a transmitter. I paid the 199.00 and it works sweet, now.... with no gay AA batteries taped to my ride. ************************************************************* Hi Paul, There are no more mercury batteries to be had, and nothing else will work it correctly. We convert it to a no battery operation and it will work on any ignition system. The cost is $199. If you would like to send it in, you can send a check with your note or we can call you for a credit card. We will need the tach head as well to calibrate it to the box.
