The idea that i did this all befor when i was 16-17 with no fear if damaging anything is funny, know i want it to work the first to and save myself the ridiculing naughbors...ps spelling may be bad so sound it out..lol

    18436572 firing order

  3. Looking at the balancer the crank turns C.W. Looking down at the distributor the rotor turns C.W. Firing order 18436572. Cylinder on drivers side are ODD starting with #1 up to the front. You can use a common X pattern for torqueing the intake starting with the center ones working your way out and alternating sides in a X pattern.

I use an old distributor shaft and housing to spin the oil pump with an electric drill motor.

I pull the coil wire and crank it with the starter til I read pressure on the gauge.

Oh - if it's a fresh motor, listen to the Fanatic.

If you use a dist shaft it will not prime the whole system without the housing.

I'd say 3 or 4 psi max for the fuel pressure.

If you have flat tappet cam, keep the rpms up to about 2000 (use ZDDP additive) for first 15/20 minutes to prevent cam damage. If you have roller cam, this isn't necessary.

Fuel pressure set on a regulator at 2.5 pounds. You won't need any more than that or the carbs will overseat and leak like a sieve. That has been my experience. The rest of the advice you recieved is correct. Good Luck. Looks good man!

  10. Delmis, remember and this is important , when dropping in the distributor, there are 2 T.D.C. or Top dead centers. You need TDC on the compression stroke. Turning the crankshaft over in the direction of rotation, or clockwise, look for the intake valve to open and close. Now line up your TDC marks on the balancer and the timing pointer. The rotor should point to cylinder #1. The vacuum can if you have will point approximately over to cylinder #8, and the number 1 and 2 spark plug wires will almost be facing straight across parallel to the radiator.

Prime it 'till all push rods flow oil.Water only (if you have a leak, its not slippery/money loss) If is hot out, have a large fan on the radiator. Just broke in my 283 3 weeks ago. Good luck!

thanks for all the info fellas, will let you know how it runs....you can never have enough advice...

  13. Trad I have missed compression on number one so many times that I can turn the dizzy 180 while rolling a cigerette and drinking a cup of coffee. :D

If it doesn't light right off it is usually a good sign that you have it 180 out. You don't have to pull the distributer all the way out just pull the hold down and lift the distributer enough to turn the rotor. tne turn it 180 and drop it right back down where it came from. Less than 5 minutes and you are back in the game.
