Accel coil problems?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by dkmc, Nov 10, 2012.

  1. Accel coil........old chevy round style 12V internal resistor.

Seems to run -fine- for around 20-30 minutes, then the missing, skipping
and stalling begins. Re-starts and idles, but won't make enough power to even move the vehicle. The coil is slightly warm but not hot to touch.

Ranting to a buddy, he said he's had bad luck with a couple Accel coils as well.

Second go-round with this, last time I replaced points, condenser, rotor, cap.
Everything (dwell, timing) is adjusted fine.

    What say ye ??

  2. I'm just spit balling here, but did it ever cross your mind to post any other important information?

  3. anything can fail..... if you are suspecting the coil replace it with a known good coil and see what happens

  4. Sure!
    No problem...
Please tell me what "other" important info you need to help decide if you've
ever had a problem with an Accel coil...

Coincidentally, that's the next step I'm planning.
Still will be curious if there's a trend toward problems with ACCEL coils in particular, and
that's why I posted the question here.
By the way, this coil does not have more than 1000 miles on it, so although I agree "anything can fail", this seems a bit short lived.

End all speculation by swapping it for a "known good" unit.... just my opinion...

Iv'e know one to spit near the top and leak. But thats about it for me.
You can get a stockish type black one for like $12 at the parts house, good for troubleshooting...Even better to keep in the tool box in the trunk for emergencys if the accell turns out to be good anyways, not bad to have a spare

The only problem I have ever had with an accell coil was many years ago... It was with the big yellow "super coil" (s)... In the 100 plus degree valley heat I had 2 of them fail... Never since tho... :):):) Never had the small round ones go bad...

The only way you are going to rule out the coil is replace. Any new part straight out of the box can be bad. Bought a waterpump and one side didn't even get machined out for the water inlet to block.

  10. i have Accel # 8140C coils on both of my hot rods, one is about 20 years old and the other i'd guess 8-10 years. they are working just fine with no problems

i have a new one on my bench and i see it says made in china. i don't know where the older ones on the cars were made

i bought the new coil thinking that the coil on my `36 was going bad but it turned out to be the Accel points

sounds like the coil is getting hot. I have had the same problem myself. If your coil is on top of the engine move it away from there and mount it to the fire wall or inner fender if you can.

We chased a problem with my Son's rpu where it would run fine for about 10 miles then start cutting out and stalling. We were thinking vapor lock but one day he touched the coil and it was red hot. Come to find out Accel makes a couple of the chrome round ones, one for points and one for HEI, we had a point one and it was cooking the coil. Bought a proper HEI Accel coil and it is still running fine. Two of our other cars have Accel coils and they have never had a problem either.

I think you just have a bad coil or too much voltage going to it, check the incoming voltage to be sure your resister is cutting it down enough.

  13. Well this was a trick question.......partly because the application was not a hot rod. Oh it is a slant 6 fer sure.....
And it fits within the year boundaries at 1970 but it's not a car.

    It's a forklift....

And it's not gasoline it's propane.

And I read on the H.A.M.B. someplace that 90% of all carburetor problems are electrical, but in this case 100% of this electrical problem was carborational.

Bad fuel regulator.....or rather....the regulator went irregular....
    I think the diaphragm cracked.
