I must be doing something wrong. I have never bought a car by accident.

I have bought a few that fell under the thought of "I can't believe THAT car sold that cheap." It may have been unexpected, but it wasn't by accident.

Looks like you had a pretty good accident.

Nice “accident” and I’ve always loved the ‘40 Fords but especially the coupes and converts. However with the top up those are some acreage size blind quarters so I hope you’ll drive it on sunny days....

Just think of all the conversations you’re going to have with guys wanting to buy your vert, I’d bet it happens every time you park it…:)

Well kinda sorta. Thru in a early bid, just trying to stir the pot I guess. Told the wife that no way in hell will that win the bid. She replied "what if it does?" The rest is history

Yes it does have the Columbia. From what I can tell that is what the vacuum tank and guage on the firewall are for?

The car has been sitting since 2015 when the previous owner died. Corey said they just put enough gas in it to fire it and see if it ran. Being it has sat that long I figured I start from square one to see what I have. From what I can tell I'm the third owner. Going to try and contact the widow and try to get some history on the car. I will keep you guys posted on this thread on my progress with pix if I can. All info from you guys will be appreciated.

  12. Hoping you can get some history on the car! And, maybe I need to just come see this at your place sometime since I missed you on your way through? :D My parent company is based out of the Minneapolis area and I may be needing to make a trip up there in the near future…

Cripes, looks like you not only stirred the pot, but you licked the spoon too!
That is a real peach of a 40.
By your description of the transaction that went pretty smoothly, must be more to the story, don't even want to know the price but timing (and money) was on your side.
Good score, should be a fun car.

Badass. Good for you. Dads 39 Convert Comparo.jpg That is a classic beauty. Since my Dad owned a 39 back in the 40's I've always been a fan.

  19. The single spot light is telling you "I want to be an early custom, chopped Carson top and 6 in shakles and skirts, dual exhausts, ditch the bumper guards and ends, get busy listen to your car. It is a real beauty.

I like your advice. Not so sure of the Carson top but like all the other ideas. How bout early 327 with 4sp or leave 3 on the tree?

  21. 327 and 3 on the tree.

  22. Flip the column shifter over to the Left Side, making it a "Girlfriend Shift" and you'll be set. JW

  25. I bet you could easily flip it for at least twice what you paid for it.
I would have gladly “accidentally” bought it for winning bid.

  26. Prices are way down on these and little is selling, good for us guys who have always wanted one but could not afford one. Saw a 40 covert recently in similar condition bought for less than $10K on a FB 40 page. These used to be $65K+ cars, no longer, a very nice '38 woody on BAT sold under 40K, unheard of! Bad for the flippers/dealers and folks who thought they were sitting on a pile of money. I wish I could buy 10 at these prices. Enjoy it for the old car it is and drive the heck out of it for a long time.

  27. @MMM1693 One curious question, where did you find the original listing? I keep searches on eBay, Live Auctioneers and B-A-T for 40 fords not for sale by dealers. I know about hemmings and classsiccars.com but just never bothered setting up alerts and probably should. Though apparently, that can be dangerous.

When I bought my '40 about 5 years ago I told my wife these prices won't stay low long. I'm glad I was able to afford one finally. It was an older resto that had sat for a while. It's crazy to me how cars I dreamed about as a teen are affordable now and cars that were worthless then are worth a ton now. Times and tastes change I guess.
