Hey, Ryan; Like I said, good start. The splash aprons would be correct, even for a fenderless weekend toy. Too hard to get off, & then replace. Easier for you that way. & more correct for the time-frame anyways. Add the fenders as you find them. Also remember, a 10yo car would have decent paint. Not new, or "show". Might have been repainted, w/a brush or powder-puff in enamel. Esp coming off of the depression, folks were careful w/what they had. Hand-me-downs were very common, & taken care of, since it always beat the alternative. It wouldn't be out of the question to add some hop-up parts to get better performance out of an old mill - that's probably been repaired or replaced - at least once... . 10 yrs was a long time for daily drivers back then, even though they didn't cover the same amount ground we do now. & lots of those early parts, if not from the junkyard(s), would be reasonable from the dealer as "old-stock". They'd be fairly happy to unload them on some(any)one that had some coin. Tough times... ;( . The only wheels i'd do my best to avoid, would be the factory-stock modelT(wood or wires)& modelA wheels. Yup, usually round, but not in any way "performance" wheels. Aftermarket of the day, even back to the T era(incl the dirt-track, board-track, etc), would be correct, but like any hotrodders even today, newest factory wheels would be happily sought & used w/o reservation(s). So the ~35-type wire wheels would also work. Don't remember when the bent-spoke Kelseys showed up. & even 2 instead of 4 would be used until a full set could be found. Any wheels for other makes would be fair game, too. Marcus...
Hey RyanAK, Here is a picture of a bone stock '29 with 17 inch Ford '33-'34 wheels. Rears are 7-00-7-50-17 fronts 6-00-6-50-17. This kind of set-up is in the time period. The gigantic rears can seriously raise top end, even with a stock rear, and they give you automatic rake! Just an option. Not doing an ad, but I have sold a lot of wheels on the HAMB! Love this build!
Hey, gang. I’m back on 12 hour days and just haven’t been able to keep up here. Rest ***ured, small bits of progress are being made! More soon, but wanted to say thanks for remaining interested and supportive of what Spence and I are doing.
Ya know, Ryan; Seeing an office decorated in ever-improving-quality-rebuilt EarlyFordParts, seems a whole lot better & much more mentally-relaxing, than some cheesy painting reprint, or worse, some corporate mind-numbing-slogans. . I like your ever-increasing, & soon-to-be-changing, decor. . Marcus...
Eleven months of 70-90 hour weeks. They didn’t break me, but I’m badly bent. Back to achievable pre-WWII jalopy building. Soooo much to do and a long list of small parts to source. Spence is pumped.
Methinks you have us ALL pumped, Ryan! Love the office carb rebuild center and suspension rebuild quarters... That tub looks real straight. Are there issues with the sub frame? Recalling queries about rivet removal earlier.
If you want to build a prewar car and have no time, you create the time. That’s part of making it achievable. The body is damn straight. Not perfect, but really good. Only one spot in the driver rear wheel well that looks to have an iffy repair. But it’ll do for what we’re building. Spencer is down to dark gray or dark navy blue for paint. He’s “forward looking”. Ha. The rivets I believe I was referring to are frame rivets. We’re moving the body to the first ch***is because the frame the tub came on is bolted together and things racked when the engine was pulled… so it’s out of square. No motor mounts/motor and bolted crossmembers equals //. Things are coming together. I’m on pause for a solution to go from 32 perches to A spring. Matt (Hitchhiker) suggested using 32 shackles with both perch-side pins/bushings. I may do that, but wanted to use A shackles. (I don’t know why…) I have godless poly bushings for the perches coming that will let me run A shackles with 32 perches and an A spring. McMaster Carr has the steel drill bushings (3/4” OD x 1/2” ID x 1-3/4 Long), but they’re $24. Each! Need to get the 32 front brake shoes lined. That and bushings then the new front end can get swapped in. Then swap in rear end and figure out the rear spring to get her **** down. Joey helped in a HUGE way by sending along rear cast iron drums and shoes. Grumpy is one of my spirit animals… Spence made a thank you card to send to California. Good lad. Then move the body. And then hop up the engine. Figure out lights… Windshield… Um… oh! Interior!! That has me stressed. I can do everything else, but I gotta figure out a safe and comfortable period interior. I’m not an upholsterer. Minus the interior, Spencer and I can get this built in two weeks… spread out over… hmmm…. Hershey. I can do this by Hershey. Yep.
Looking forward to to it as well! So much to do. Dad says it’s a weekend project… just 37 weekends long. Ha. And I’ve had zero weekends since the first ch***is came home. So…
Spencer looks great, really growing and I love his artwork. We miss seeing you around. Does Spencer need car mags-got lots of old ones we could drop off.?
Hey, Ryan; Get them out of sight quickly. In terms of code-enforcement, temp garages(plastic covered metal tubing things - or other tents) should work, unless there is a local prohibition against them. Make sure you vent the tents very well, or stuff'll rust faster than you think possible. Sometimes fencing(high enuf to hide all, ~6'(?) ) will work, but usually only 'till some *** complains - after tresp***ing to see what's in the fencing. Problems come about when the damned code-enforcers can see it from the air... ;( . No mice protection in the last 2. Another possible solution are 20' or 40' sea-containers, the new ones are vented nicely. Keeps the damned mice, & neighbors out of the stuff. I've seen garages built out of them, laid side-by-side, bolted together w/the adjoining walls cut out. Not ideal, but... Sometimes the code guy can be cool, &'ll tell you how to "get by" aka "comply", w/an extended time frame to get things accomplished. You do gotta ask. Sometimes they have no choice & you've got to get visible stuff off property right away(read: storage facility, 'till you get the large garage built). BTDT. = no fun at all... Makes life more difficult than necessary. Esp when you're dbl-swamped at work. ;( . -Maybe- some of it could fit onto the porch & then make a temp non-see-thru-3-season-version porch enclosure(black plastic, or a light framework covered in pinkfoam, etc?) & maybe some of the parts fit into in ba*****t ??? Good luck, hope it gets easier for you, soon. Marcus...
I know their traditional but ditch the concrete blocks before one crumbles and someone gets hurt. Otherwise welcome back.
Well it's not really close, but if you need temporary storage for some stuff, I have an empty bay in our big bank barn you can use.
It isn’t just the jalopies. I received a 12 page registered letter… the Borough or some “concerned citizen” really has it out for us. Not what I need and not what I was expecting considering what we do for this community… I’ll stop there because no one needs to hear this rant.
Bushings for the 32 perches to work with Model A shackles should be here tomorrow. So… I think we’ll try a 6-leaf pack to start. I’ll clean these up tonight. Reverse eye main leaf, six total leaves, 32 axle… should be close to good. Spencer is determined to get that lettering off!
That sux re Code, was only thinking about it yesterday at home, fortunately it isn't a thing around here as yet...
