Has anybody used the acrylic lacquer products from Trinity1945 or TCP Global ? Trinity1945 seems to be more genaric in thier colors where as TCP can do matches to almost anything. It looks like TCP is useing Ditzler PPG tints and formulas. TCP also has pearls and flip flops that I want. Just looking for input about either of these places.
I've used TCP for the last few years, fraction of the cost my local PPG store wants for laquer. And yeah, they match about anything.
Er what? I have all the Ditzler Acrylic Laquer toners and polys, additives, etc. So I DO mix my own paint I've only got the dash done on my Ford so far in two tone, and some test panels on the car, but I really like using the stuff. I have not bought A.L. from TPC, but have had 2 qts mixed of SS urethane in two dark blues to see if they matched the remaining orig paint areas I found on my avatar car Nash. They matched fine, from what I can see, and the stuff came in fairly quick. I do not recall ever seeing a compliant on TPC.
???? There was a time not all that long ago that almost all custom paint jobs were done in lacquer. Shoot three or four coats and block it out and shoot three or four more was pretty well standard procedure up into the last 25 years when they finally came out with other paints that would give the effect the painter wanted and not take all day for a coat to dry. True lacquer takes a lot more upkeep than the newer enamels which have come a long way. I can't help you on those paint companies Trbomax, I haven't had any dealings with them yet. My 48 was painted gold lacquer in 1973 just before we took it to the street rod nationals in Tulsa Ok and it was probably one of the first but unintentional satin paint jobs that was ever done. The gent who sold me the paint never asked why I wasn't buying the clear that I needed to make it shine. My buddies actually painted it while I was at work in one of them's garage. Cost me a case of beer to have it painted after I masked it and left for work.
Acrylic Lacquer had its place at one time, the base coat clear coat systems are just a more durable paint. That being said the two part primers and sealers today are also much better than the lacquer primers. The paint is only as good as the foundation below it!
My situation is that I learned to paint in the 60's and A L was what was used. I did a lot of cars, bikes, and drag boats back then, but quit painting in the late 70's. I am redoing my 28 chev 3 window and its A L from '65.I am doing it with flip flop pearl flames and since this will be the last car I will ever do,I dont want to learn a new method,I want to do what I know. It will never be in the weather or sun unless I'm driveing it and since lacquer was good for 60 or 70 years on cars,I'm sure it will hold up just fine on mine! Did you have to buy out a paint distributor to get all the intermix stuff?
Lacquer comment: Very forgiving for a not-so-good painter like me. (Screw it up, wait 30 mins, sand it out, and shoot again.) True it is not as durable as the urethanes, but for a limited use vehicle, works fine for me. Plus it is not quite so hazardous - I've shot lacquer a few times in the garage attached to the house, with only a respirator mask on*. I would not do that with urethane. Also, lacquer overspray is dry by the time it hits the floor - easy cleanup. Shot enamel once - never again! I like lacquer, and glad to know about TPC. * Stop it! Yeah, I was fully clothed too, but short sleeves. No special protective coveralls.
Do yourself a favor and check out a urethane. Lot less work lot better results way more durable. I do it for a living , just friendly advice....RS59
It's me again. Blue dot makes some good points. I've done a couple lacquer jobs in past few years and buying any laquer products though local jobbers is a mighty pricey venture. Learning a new process? Base coat sprays much like lacquer only easier. The clear sprays like enamel...only easier. Spray it how ya want it to look. Flows very little. DuPont nason is priced reasonable . If you do buy online be cautious of haz mat shipping chArges.........good luck. rS59
Not a fan of the TCP product in general. No matter the type. I do like Lacquer but not the acrylic. I can't remember the place but somebody in NJ sells the nitrocellulose lacquer. You really can't get any easier. With a bit of upkeep on a non daily driver it works great. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
So the base coat goes on like lacquer? The underbase I will use is the same color the car is now, actually thats why it was done in the64 pont blue/black poly,I had intended to finish the car in the pearl flip over the blue/black,but got sidetracked and never finished it.The A L 64 pont color is fine, its been in a my building since '65 and only seen sunlight 2-3 times. Ive got a pint of real mop concintrate from the early 60's that I want to use intermixed with candy red and candy blue for the flames, more dense at the leading edges with a fade out from the red/blue to all red at the tips. Obviously Ive got to do some mixing and some sprayouts to see what will work, but to try to do something like that with urethane I wouldnt know where to start. This would be my delima. Ive done this kind of thing with A L so its a no brainer. Now after I have all the base work done and get it buried with 3-4 coats of clear A L,then I would be interested in a urethane clear system that could be used over it. In the old days,I would topcoat with clear delthane, but thats probably not around anymore either and I really did not like the iso cyanate in it either.
TCP Global acrylic lacquer works fine. Have used it spot in a repair on an older GM car with original lacquer paint. The match was good and blend and buff nearly an invisible repair! KK
Lacquer anyone? Small history tid-bit. With EPA doing their thing... what's is in this can feels like GOLD. It did me and customers right for many years. A gallon can of Clear Lacquer from John Kosmoski's House of Kolor. I paid cash, put it John's hands myself in Minneapolis. Sign over the counter read, "CIF - Cash In Fist". That's how it was done, I appreciated that, took it as a lesson, and bought many more. Can anyone guess what year(s) it came from? Dave
1969? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o> </o> I have 1 gallon of Kustom Kolor lacquer clear I would sell never been opened
