Former street/strip 2332, freeway flyer, adjustable struts, 4 wheel discs… Father in law took it in to get a new distributor and the carbs adjusted… It came back stock running gear… At least the shop did not steal my A.R.E. 8 spokes… Sitting on 195/60 and 215/70 dryrotten tires. It runs, but has no brakes
@Scruffy49 are you saying that they took the whole engine? Did your f i l agree to that? Just curious, neat project btw, cheers
They took: engine, transaxle, dual carbs, 4 wheel disc conversion and the adjustable front struts. They put it all back to stock because he was old and it was “safer”. The usual with him, WW2 vet, nonconfrontational to the point of bullied/ripped off constantly. His “friends” were a bunch of cheap con artists who saw him coming a mile away.
Gonna cost close to $12k to replicate the car as it was when purchased. Stock? It can go to the crusher…

Hmmm, sounds a whole lot like: Conspiracy, RICO, Theft, Grand Theft, Larceny, Grand Larceny, Elder Abuse. Possibly breaking a Contract, & more... Can you ID the stolen parts? Have any prior paperwork showing/listing what parts the bug had on it, prior to that shop getting ahold of it? Have you noted any other old-speed/collectable parts missing from the bug? Was the shop in TN(if not, would add Inter-State to charges). What does(his) copy of the work order(contract) show to be done? Vs what actually got done? Did they note(in writing) that changes were made for "his safety"? There are some acvw sites that I would also post this on, maybe not so much for anticipated/hoped-for help, but to get the word out, as far as possible, about this shop & it's practices. & maybe someone can ID the stolen parts if sold? It's possible that someone else has run into these characters before - or actually knows them, & could help straighten out this mess. These guys do not deserve mercy, nor profiting from their dirty deeds. The shop should be named, & so should the owner, & all employees. Shop closed in 2014. He had the car on the road until 2007, when it went in the barn until Oct of 2022. I pulled it out 4 years after my f-i-l p***ed away. Wife and I left the car in his care in 2001, along with -her- 68 Beetle. Pickers conned him out of: 68 Beetle, 60s Cherokee fish & ski deep V bow aluminum boat, 1946 Willys CJ2A, 1963 F250, 1985 F250, real steamer trunks, real 15th through 18th century furniture, 3 table top gramophones, his WW2 bring back Japanese machine gun… We moved back in 2011. Unfortunately, no way to recover any of it. Antiques are dirt common here, pickers send them to NYC, Frisco, Seattle, Boston right away. Worth 10-30x more in those cities. Guaranteed the trucks and 68 Bug left the state within hours, they were all showroom perfect. None have resurfaced via vin look up by law enforcement. The CJ2A? No great loss, rust bucket farm car. But the principle chaps my *** something fierce.
Quite sorry to hear that. I'd at least reward them as I could, naming Shop, Owner, & all who worked there - if known, & I could. Thank 'em for the heartache(s) they've given. Karma's a ***** at times, no timetable on rewards, but they'll come. I've been known to augment the starting of it, at times... & sometimes, refusing to push back, other than to "out" them for their deeds. Shop owner died in 2014. His kids sold whatever was there for pennies on the dollar to get out from under his shadow. It’s now a vintage Mopar repository/shop, primarily for a multimillionaire local car nut. Has real 426 Hemis sitting around like cast off 2bbl LA318s…
At cars & coffee this morning. Good turnout of cars in spite of 95-degree weather. This is a local group of owners...great people.

A VW Brasilia. They apparently made over a million of these things, but I guess not too many were exported.
