this was my first time "involved" with an auction. had an absolute blast . lots of action, and the venue was fun. it is a must do if you get the chance.
Danny, I thought there were a lot of good deals. I saw some stuff sell for a fraction of what it would take to build. lots of fun stuff.
I watched it on the tube for a short time on super Saturday. seen a 57 chebby 2dr ht sell for like 27K had the dual quad 283 nicely restored car also.. Prices seemed really down..
Well Ted, were you buying or selling? That 57 Buick for 15K looked like a great deal, was it 2 dr or 4 dr, hardtop or post?
watched it for a bit. The 40 Fords looked pretty good for the price as did a few others. I may have been tempted on a couple.
I prepped a couple cars to be sold and was brought there to look a few cars over, before my client bid on them. the Buick was a hard top like the one I had. it was a really decent car.
the tin woody, the green forty, the green ad chevy and the red 57 belonged to the same collection and were about perfect. I doubt the new owners will be disappointed.
Went to the Me*** Indy Aution a few years ago, buddy had a car to sell, had a bunch of his Buds go along for ****s and grins. It was a neat experience, even had an oportunity to experience some "auction drama". The thing that impressed me the most was actually unfolded on the TV showing. There were 2, 56 Chevie post coupes in the "***embly line", the line up working their way up to the auction stage. Both were red and white (different reds) both looked very nice but the "resale red coupe" was a LOT sharper. Paint and paint details were exceptional, body panel fit was really gone after, the interior was a very nicely done pro job. Didn't look under neath either car but the resale reds engine compartment was MUCH more detailed, wiring, paint details, panel fit, etc.--------Bottom line, resale red sells for well over 50k, the other red 56 around 30k. --------------------My buddys car does not meet reserve, so goes to the "holding area". In the holding area buyers can come and look over the no sale cars. Talk to the owners and perhaps make an offer on the car, My Buddy gets an offer pretty close to his reserve number and sold the car. Have no idea what the auction fees were on either buyer or seller.---------- Couple of days later (on tape) I saw all the above cars go across the block. Buddies car REALLY looked good, couldn't believe it didn't make the reserve!! ------------As for the 2, 56 post coupes, DAMN, they both looked GREAT!! ON TV they were both SHARP. So I guess all the people who were interested in RED 56 post coupes were ALSO in the ***embly line area seeing the difference. tb33-- got it right , if you ever get a chance to go to a big time auction, DO IT, Its worth the trip!!! My buddy owns a shop and one of his customers has some old cars, he got a '64 Impala ragtop at Me*** in Florida a few years back. I'm not sure if he did a phone buy or was down there. The car is quite the hooptie. Bondo all over, the entire ch***is boxed for some reason. The panel fits were terrible. The last I saw of it the 327 was getting a new set of heads installed. The owner admits he was beat on the deal.
that is why I was there, to point out any problems. any body who buys a car with out having a trained eye look it over runs the chance of being disappointed. the blue sl looked fantastic at first view, but there was way too much wrong with it to allow him to bid on it. on a scale of 1-10 it was a 5 and went for 8 money.
The trick is to find reasons NOT to buy the car. The guy was lucky to have you there. Cars that are dummied up for a sale are hard to detect for almost anyone else.
I worked on a few cars that guys have bought at auction. one of which, a 1961 M.GA. looked absolutely perfect. the catalog said it had a meticulous restoration done. the list I got and what I found: wiper don't work. - no wiper motor horn doesn't work.- no wiring, or horns. head lights don't work- no wiring for lights. what are the switches on dash for- nothing, there to fill holes. noisy ****** -no gear oil. these are just the things I remember the list was long.
