Im currently building a '29 cc truck/converting to a hotrod. Im running a '87 ho 302(306) with a t5(came with the block). I built the motor and had the trans gone through and a rebuild kit put in it. Well, I went to install the motor/trans on the frame last night, and the shifter was right below the rear cross-member. Nothin was goin right!!! i even had to take the headers off cause they were gonna hit the frame/scratch my paint up. I made a call to Brookville Roadster (where I got my frame), and to find out, the use a s10 t5 with the SBF, cause the shifter sets farther forward then the ford t5. I was thinkin that i may be able to just get a tailshaft section and place it on my t5 so I can still use it. Or, jus buy an s10 t5 and start over. Anyone have any input on this? And, what alterations would have to be made?? Kevin
There is alot of threads on here about the t5, I don't believe the ford and chevy parts are interchangable but the newer s10 t5 has the ford bolt pattern to bolt up to your bell housing, your going to have to probably crossbreed a clutch also, use the search function on here and you should be able to get your questions answered.
The input shaft splines are different between ford and GM transmissions. The friction discs should interchange. The pilot bear I.D's should be the same but I'm not 100%. The bolt circles for the bell housings are the same. I'm not sure about clutch throw outs ether. I think the S-10 has a hydraulic throw out and the ford is cable operated. The internal parts between the S-10 and the ford are different.
I think you can just swap the shifter, shift rails, and tail housing. The speedometer gear will require some rigging(i think there is a thread on the speedometer gear).Keep the ford gearbox as it has better gear ratios than the S10 box.
WingedExpress, you are deff right on that one. I gave Tremec a call today and the guy I spoke with told me to google "The Ultimate T-5 Swap" and that answered all my questions right there. Thanks for your help......
You will love the T5.The ford trans you have is stronger than most S10 transmissions and the low first gear in the S10 trans is useless.
