Hey guys i've got a set of wide five hubcaps, and a set of early Ford 16 x 4 (2) and 4.5 (2) and was hoping there was a way i could run the wide five hubcaps (because lets face it, they are cool) on the early ford 16" wheels. Has anyone ever done this before? If so how do you do it?
I was thinking that if i folded up some of the clips then perhaps i could spot weld or rivet them to my 16" wheels somehow, and it'd then hold them. I dunno.. might have to put one on to see if it'd even look good or not first.
I guess you just can't find wide-5 wheels & drums at the local swap meet when you are down under. Maybe hold off using those wheel caps until you have the wheels?
Wide-5s might be cool, but '40s are cooler If you didn't already know, '37-'39 wide-5 hubs/drums should be a straight swap for your '40-up drums. Ford Pilot and '36 front drums have a different offset I think, so might not work without spacers (if at all).
As AJofHollywood said Chris, they are VERY hard to find here. I think '40 wheels are cooler than wide 5's but i was wondering if it was possible to adapt the hubcaps. I think they are cool looking. If i can't adapt the hubcaps to fit the '40 wheels with some clips then i won't worry about it, at this stage it was just an idea anyway. I didn't think i'd ever seen it done before either so might of actually been something new.
No offence meant to you guys but it is amazing the stuff that is taken for granted over there. How about you guys just grab a right hand drive steering box out of a '54 Holden ute to use on that custom project. 28A I suppose where there's a will.....but I've never seen it done. Pete
You could get a set of the 'outer trim rings' not the normal ones but the larger type and tig them to wide 5 caps. That would work. You would prob need to get the clip feature off the wide 5 cap for a flush looking 1 piece cap. 16" caps rule, getting them over early ford running gear is the issue with most caps. Make sure you test fit them with the axles/nut in the diff.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-NOS...pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr This kinda trim ring but 16".
I suppose in that vein, if you could find a way to attach late model caps inside the wide five caps and use the original mounting lugs in the '40 wheels
This is insanely true. Stuff that you guys might find out in a dumpster is like rusty gold for us over here. When i get to it i plan to place a cap over the '40 wheel and just see if it'd even look good and then figure out how to do it. I get what you mean but my intention was to run the hubcap minus a trim ring, so that wouldn't work for the look i'm thinking of. Now that you mention the axles hanging out i wonder if it would actually foul on it or not. Thats another good point that i'll have to check out. Good tip.
Just noticed REM's avatar is kind of what i think they look like, with a wide 5 cap on a '40 wheel. I tried it a fortnight ago and thats kinda what it looked like.
That wheel is an accessory one that takes Lincoln caps. The caps are 12" diameter, and much as I have an unhealthy lust for '40s, I've just put a set of these on my B pickup. When I put rings on there'll be very little of the actual wheel showing, so you're right, it would be a similar effect to your plan. And they do look good! To Striper, I thought you blokes had a better supply of early Ford stuff than we do in Blighty? And it shouldn't all be rusted away like ours
This definitely seems like the obvious solution, if only i could find some junk haggard '40 caps lying around for cheap. Anyone in Aus have any?
I've got a junk wide five out in the yard and a NOS '40 for my Roadster. I'll take a look at what would have to be done to make the swap work. If it is just a matter of drilling out the clip rivets and installing them on a '40 then I'll have them in the mail to you. There must be three other HAMB members with a junk wide fine as well.
Man that would be unreal if you could post the clips to me! I'll pm you my uncles address in Florida and he can put it with the rest of my parts my old man is bringing home for me. Thanks mate!
