I was gifted these lights from a neighbor. I was thinking of modifying one to run in the center of the grill on my 49 ford custom. What do you guys think? Is it better to just buy a new light and housing or retrofit one of these? My car is still 6v positive ground.
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/nos-shoebox-ford-grill-foglight.972054/ It was actually an accessory back in the day... The Thread above has a plethora of conversions...I think the Ole Fog lights are overrated but that's just my opinion...it makes it look a bit like a fire vehicle or ambulance in a way...didn't the Tucker have a center light...or was it Studebaker? Make Stogy a believer...the ole center bullets were always asking for something...
It was the Tucker @Stogy I think the yellow fog light looks killer ! to have it turn with the steering would be cool !!
Hello, There are a lot of people here and elsewhere that have yellow fog lights on their hot rods. But, as legal as they are in the DMV rule book, the question is: Why? Your stock center grille look is cl***ic and is part of the defining part of your car. A yellow bulb in the center will make it look like a one-eyed monster we used to see in the old movies. This great example of attaching fog lights is one way to solve your donation. Just because someone gave you a set, doesn’t always mean you have to install it. The above Ford Sedan Delivery is a coastal So Cal hot rod/cruiser. It has seen its share of thick fog on a daily basis. He/she may have their own ideas about the yellow fog lights or perhaps it is just an accessory for looks. But, they did not destroy the good looking stock front end/grille by a drastic modification. Having lived on the So Cal coast all of my life, the fog is so thick at times that it is too dangerous to drive anywhere. In our 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery, a friend gave me a couple of yellow fog lights he had in his garage. We installed one and turned it on in the garage and the yellow glow was kind of cool on the dark garage wall. But, out in the thick fog, the yellow light made the thick fog into a brighter yellow colored wall of glow and made driving worse. The normal single headlights from the sedan delivery made it safer to drive back to our garage and take the single yellow light off of the makeshift attachment. I even got caught in the thickest coastal fog in my 58 Impala and had to drive on the wrong side of the road next to parked cars headed in the opposite direction. I could not see across the hood or out of the window. I needed a reference, just so I could judge the distance between my car and an immovable object. From the starting point in Bixby Knolls, and down the foggy side streets, there were no cars coming or going...(smart) But, I had to get home before my Impala turned into a pumpkin... HA! Jnaki The only two DMV legal lights facing forward are white and yellow. Any extra attachments must have their own switch not ***ociated with the stock headlight switch. That way, even those multiple, long range, desert, clear bulb, hi intensity light bars are legal to mount, but must have its own switch, different from the normal standard headlight switch. The thing is, it is your car and your choice. Go for a drive in a car with a single or even a brighter yellow fog light(s) during the thickest fog or even a normal foggy day/night. It will allow you to make your own decision. Of course, YRMV
Fog lights were a gimmick... as Jnaki said, they don't work as advertised, but do look cool on some cars. I think the stock Ford center bullet looks best. If you want to use them, mount then in the conventional manner, not in the grille.
You've taken the bumper guards off to clean it up - why clutter it up again ? It looks just right the way it is ...
