Technical Adding backup light switch to after market column

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by willys36, Mar 26, 2024.

  1. Am using an aftermarket chrome tilt column in my '40 Plymouth. Running a 200R4 tranny and a neutral/park start switch which is available everywhere. That left me with no backup light. Here is how I added one.
This is the column. I added the switch on the very bottom, activated by the shift lever.

I welded a 3/8" nut onto the side of the lever. This holds a stainless bolt aimed toward the top of the column.

then I made this bracket out of 1/8" steel to hold a standard ball switch. Luckily I had a metric tap that matches the tread on the switch. It is the same thread used in late model tie rod ends. Mounting holes are slotted for adjustment. The mounting holes are in the sheet metal column housing so only a little over one thread is achieves. The 1/4" bolts are cut to about 3/16" length to clear the shift tube inside the column. It still holds easily strong enough for the purpose. Now adjusting the bolt depth to depress the ball and sliding the bracket to line up with R, I have my backup switch.

That is slick! I have functional reverse lights on everything. This is a great remedy for column swaps.
