here's the deal I have a 57 ford truck 3 speed on the column with overdrive. I also have a 57 parts truck with 6 cyl. 3 speed on the floor. question is can you put the overdrive unit on the floorshift trans.?
Despite the cases looking similar, I am fairly sure that it can't be done since the case casting was different on the 3 spd + OD units since it had addition p***ages machined into it for linkages and oil for the OD portion. However, I may be wrong, and if so, some one will correct me. If you want the floor shift, just transfer the shifter and linkages over from the parts truck.
anything is possible but is it worth it? had a friend that had an overdrive on the back of a Muncie 4 speed in his 55 chev wagon. now days there are so many 5-6 speed overdrives out there that can be adapted cheaper
That's something I've been wondering about with my 55 's M-22. The 4:10 gears are just too much for highway cruising. Anybody know what you need to put it together?
Check the 6 cyl 3 spd on the floor again, I don't think it is a 3 spd but likely a HD 4 speed with granny gear. It was my belief that Ford didn't produce the floor shift 3 spd after '50/'51. The OD will not work on the 4 spd
X2...........if that 'floor shift' is a REAL top shifter trans, it is either a 4 speed...........or from something much earlier......which is doubtful. I think MNFALCON nailed it. Ray
Not true that od will not work on 4 spd,I have met people that have added 3 spd o/d to 4 spd and muncie trans are now being made with od 4th gears
I think the poster meant the TRUCK 4 speed.........not p***enger 4 speeds as that has been done as you indicate. Ray
Thanks Ray, I did mean the truck HD 4 spd only for that comment, and I really based that comment on what I know of the older transmissions. But I would ***ume that the guts of the '57 truck 4 spd would still be significantly different than the truck light duty 3 spd which was based on the car transmissions. I did forget that Ford did also introduce a HD truck 3 speed late in the 40s so if they continued that 3 spd to the later years it could be a real 3 spd, but again is based on the HD 4 spd truck trans and shares the gears with that trans so I would again ***ume that the swap wouldn't work (although I could easily be wrong) It is my understanding that to use the OD unit from the 3 spd you would need to use the output shaft from the OD. It is my belief that there is a significant difference between the light duty 3 spd output shaft and the HD output shaft. I would say that like everything it wouldn't be impossible to do, but I truly don't believe that its as simple as bolting it on -- but again I don't have any experience with the newer HD truck trans so I could be wrong. For the OP my comment was meant only to get you to look a little deeper into what you have. A stock top loader in the truck would suggest it is a HD trans. But that doesn't mean that something strange wasn't done, ie putting a floor shifter kit on a stock or car 3 spd
I believe that the OD can only be added to a Saginaw 4-speed. Take a 3-speed OD and pull off the OD unit and take off the main shaft gears. Pull the 4-speed tailshaft housing and swap the main shaft gears onto the 3-speed mainshaft. Now you got to drill one hole for the OD lock-out. Then put it back together.
I went buy and checked the trans. it is a top loader 4-speed that's what i get for ***-suming what the former owner told me was true.
Gearvenders sells a pretty nice OD unit. That would be the simplest solution if you want to OD your M-22. Or you could just change the rear gear. Its a kind of a trade off but it is the cheapest way to go.
