I am getting ready to buy a set of lifters for my 49 merc. motor and was wondering who makes the best quality adjustable lifter at a reasonable price. I dont need a lifter that is strong enough for a top fuel motor, just a stock street motor for cruising.

And just remember to make your adjustment by screwing the bolt IN not OUT.

Could you please clarify this. I am planing on getting a set for a '51 Mercury I am building for my tub. Are they made so the adjusting bolt is installed so the lifter is always "long"? This seems to make a little sense, since normal wear would result in valve "recession", which means, you would usually be shortening their effective length when doing subsequent adjustments? What happens if you make a mistake and go too far? Is the lifter ruined, or do you have to go the route described in The Red's article and clean the threads and use loc***e?
