Hot Rods Advice Needed: A/V-8 Chop

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Section 8 Speed Shop, May 14, 2015.

  1. Hello All,
Along with a good friend (who actually knows what he's doing), I'm building a '31 A/V8 coupe. I've seen HAMB threads about chop recommendations, and they have been very helpful for gaining a general understanding. But this request is a little more specific. I'm 6'3" and would like to hear from other reasonably tall guys about their experiences. I need this car to be comfortable, and really want to avoid a mistake. We've removed the package shelf and will soon be minimizing the height and depth of the bench seat. Here's my best-guess approach, gained from other HAMB discussions: Sit in unchopped car with the modified seat installed. Measure distance from top of head to headliner to determine max chop. Use tape across top of windshield to mimic view at various levels of chop. Pick max chop that's still comfortable. Would this work? I'd love a 3-4"chop for the look, but want to be able to drive car for several hours at a time, so I'm thinking 2-2.5". So, tall guys, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

The method you describe is exactly how I decided how far to chop my '53 Chevy. It's really the only way because each of us has a different idea about how much headroom & visibility is "okay" or acceptable.

If I was you If your set on a model a , build the whole car, get the seating a slow as possible, even sinking the floor past the frame make it comfortable , then bring down the roof, you will have a better idea of how low you can go then 4-5" should be do-able with proper planning
