Imagine how much lift that Fiat "Tank" body generated at speed.

I can't remember seeing this picture of Parry Thomas. Looks to have been taken outside R101's hanger too.

Leave it to Napier to provide the most interesting engine designs! Some were V's,Some W's and Y's and Even A "D"! . During the war they tried to build a flat Diesel that could be fitted in the wings of an aircraft . obviosly it didn't work but the engine was successful in another way. they joined three of them to toegther to form a D shaped engine with three crankshafts ,the Napier Deltic.

Yuor cut away picture doesn't illustrate just how small the Deltics were. I worked on bothg marine engines ( the royal navy still use them) and the baby deltics in Locomotives.
The most horsepower ever developed from a Deltic was 5800 bhp.
The engineers calculated that the engine would throw a rod at 5300 BHP. now thats engineering know how for you!.

I mentioned the various configurations and forgot the "H" shape of the Napier Rapier.

Thats still standing isn't it? at Brooklands? It was the workshop of leo Villa, probably the most knowledgable man to ever develop land speed cars alive or dead. he worked for the Campbells for 44 years.

Wow. Great thread. Some great photos, I recognise some from Dick Wallens book.. Love the Brooklands / Board Track Era. The men that drove these were true heros, everyone of them.

Thought I would post a couple up from Austin Harris's site as some of you may not have seen it... www.austinharris.co.uk Check it out..

FB you have really scored on the pics-good quality too. Like the garage shot as well. Thought I would throw out the Packard racing garage they built at Sheepshead Bay. If you look closely you will see the 299 frame horns in the entrance. DePalma is second from our right. Also including a pic of the banking which had to have been a blast. Not too long ago I experienced riding on the banks at the GM proving grounds. Was probably great fun (with the oil and all) at speed in those days. The pics of the crash of Gaston Chevrolet and O'Donnell is something that captivates me. I have an original newspaper article from LA framed and hanging on my wall in my shop. I am a huge fan of the Chevrolet brothers and their exploits with the Frontenacs and that accident at Beverly Hills was a sad day for the 1920 Indy winner, who never got to really enjoy his fame.-Jim
