So I finally broke down and bought an after market rear spring for my project. I thought it would be an easy way to jump start a project that has just about flat-lined. Anyway, the spring got here yesterday and I wanted some opinions. You see, at first glance, I was not overly impressed. The spring seems to be in fine working order but it just looks kind of rough. I intend to round off the ends and chamfer the edges but still I am contemplating returning it. It almost looks like where the ends of the leaves were supposed to be cut, they pulled them off some how...kind of like taffy. The width is not uniform and one leaf even seems to turns to one side. Again, it's just at the ends where I plan on dressing them up anyway but what are your opinions? Does it even matter? Does it affect performance? Is it any different than something that would have come off the ***embly line in the 1930's? Should I expect more from an aftermarket piece from a well established, reputable dealer? Thanks P.S. I may post pictures later (after work)
What did you pay for it? If you bought the cheapest one you could find, looks about right. Clean it up and run it.
Damn. If one like that had come out of Henry's spring plant in 1932, he would have used the entire staff as a source of carbon for his blast furnace, bulldozed the building and machinery, and started over! It may well work OK, or the steel and heat treat may match the cutting in quality...who knows, but nothing that ugly and badly crafted should be on a hotrod.
I worked in a spring shop for 40 years,I dont see anything wrong with the functionality of that spring,It's not pretty but should work fine.
OK guys, I talked to the shop and they are going to replace it. Sounds like there was some kind of mix up because it doesn't look anything like the ones they have in stock according to the pix I saw. I will keep you guys posted. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Until I saw that picture I was going to say just clean it up and run it, but that thing is horrible. I've run Posies springs and Speedway springs and while the Posies are better quality the Speedway aren't bad at all for the money. All springs need some cleanup when you get them, both to make them cosmetically nicer and also function a little better. I also add Ch***is Engineering slider ****ons to non-Posies springs and that helps a lot in the way the leaves slide on each other. Glad you are returning that one, it is really bad. Don
Update: they replaced my spring and it looks great. Almost no h***le at all. Just had to pay to have it shipped back but they are giving me credit for that. I am pleased over all. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
