As soon as the GassnStudeWagon returns home from it's sugical recovery in Albuquerque NM I plan to start replacing floor panels. I figure while I'm at it I might as well get a shifter installed. The question is which one? Not having done any track drag racing I have little knowledge of the availible shifters. Seeing how the Stude isn't exactly what you would call a dead on period gasser, I'm willing to use something that muight look out of place. Only thing I have to make sure of is that the shifter will work as well on the street as well as the strip. Suggestions....????
Lokar are pretty and all but how I don't think I'd wanna be slamming the gears with one. Anyone use them for racing?
Cheetah SCS from Turbo Action, the bracket racer's favorite. I have one in my '64 GTO race car and I love it. Its positive action, smooth cable movement and well-defined gates have helped me win a lot of races. Simply the best one out there.
About a thousand years ago (mid 70s), I had one of those Hurst "His and Hers" shifters on my coupe. Worked exactly as advertised. Had regular gate on the left, and you could move it to the alternate gate when in neutral. In that gate, it had positive stops to shift up or down one gear at a time. I don't think they have been in production for some time, but is sure worked well, both on the street and for the few times I had to defend my car's honor from those late model pukes with too much mouth....
B&M mega shifter, had one years ago with no problems. My son has one in his SBC S-10 he likes it. You can shift it normal or drop it down in rachet mode & bang away. Later,Mark
I'm partial to the Mr Gasket (now same as Hurst) Pro-matic and V-matic*****ers. I've used them in several project cars and they work great. The Pro-Matic is a simple to use shifter with no frills. It ratchets in BOTH directions so it'll work with reverse pattern valve bodies...or you can just grab the handle and slam it down one position for passing or whatever. The V-matic is a dual mode*****er that can function as a ratcheting shifter, or a s a stock shifter. Slightly more money, but the easier stock gate apeals to some people more than a full ratcheting shifter all the time does. I like the Pro-Matic...but I toss the goofy shift knob and put something else on it...usually a T-handle or a plain black ball! B&M makes very similar offerings, but their quality isn't up to par. I've seen to many of them break...no fun holding a shift lever in your hand in a parking lot somewhere...or during a full throttle pass! Just some observations from my own personal experiences!
I like the Pro-Matic as well..., but we just went to a "Bruno/Lenco" setup and it beats the old Glide by tenth of a second! Got a great deal on it..., $7,000 complete and some change for repairs...!
