Technical Aftermarket steering columns?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alteredpilot, May 30, 2024.

  1. Here is the car I built with the Summit tilt chrome column. Has standard GM plugs and such. I also try to adapt the original steering wheel to modern columns. This one went on with a few simple modifications. it's pretty dirty, splattered with polishing compound. Ignore the dirt. IMG_0918.jpg IMG_0919.jpg

Still have 2 or 3 of the Chevy van columns somewhere in my main shed.
Sold the snot out of them in the pre-aftermarket days. Could pull into a yard and grab 3-4 then move on.
I think I depopulated the supply in a 200 mile radius.
    Now I just hoard them,lol.

If you think the van version has gotten hard to find try finding the similar pickup version.
You see them on that auction site but they are big $$$$ nowadays.

I prefer a factory column over aftermarket. If I was to build a roadster I would fabricate a column to fit the application. For my avatar I wanted a tilt column, I had two in my inventory to choose from, a ‘69 Lincoln, but it was for a column shift automatic and I have a floor mounted four speed. The second option was a ‘67 Cougar column, it had no shifter, no key, and the signal lever doubled as the tilt lever. I had to shorten the length, adapt the stock Comet steering wheel and adapt the wiring. The installation looks undetectable which is exactly what I wanted.
