With my 54 there are two body areas that need new metal and/or repair. ***uming new metal, welding, grinding etc., the fixed areas are not going to look like the cool patina that i've got. Is there a way to make the metal age some to help match that patina? Spray some water and let it rust?

Man I can't answer your question.... but if one of the areas you want to fix is the truck I'd leave it alone. Looks cool IMO.

I'd try and put some adhesive patch's of some kind on the inside so the truck is sealed and call it a day!

  3. You could actually bite the bullet and paint it. or spray some primer on the repaired areas until you can afford to paint it.

Contrary to popular belief those old cars look really nice painted.

Correct me if I'm wrong. You want to repair some rust, so you can let it rust again? Guess I'm missing something. -Dave.

^ he wants to repair the cancer and have it look like no repair was done^

Full metal- I would clean the rust off the paint and see what you have, A good clr bath and some elbow grease and you should be able to see what your working with. patina is different than rust if you repair then just rust the repair it will look like a ****ty half *** repair. I would find some paint that is close and do my best to match it in those areas.

A rose by any other name will still smell as sweet. But, rust is rust even if you do call it that fancy patina stuff. Just my opinion. -Dave

    Thanks everyone!

@Blase, maybe I can come up with a story about some mafia guy locked in the trunk who used a shotgun to get out.

@pdunn10, thanks, i'll start with your suggestions.

@Blue One, Hopefully this is my only patina question for my build :)

weld it up, prime and paint, then before the paint dries, throw the dust/shavings from a brake lathe at it. park it outside and let mother nature do it's thing. than when the patina era is gone it can be sanded off.

First do a quality patch panel repair and paint it. Now spray some red primer over the paint and sand through the primer 'till the paint shows. It will look like aged , worn paint. If the car is not a total rust bucket I would repair the damage and go for a decent repaint and drive it.

The rusted through spots already match your patina. Just leave it be. Why would you want a repair when your object is to make it look all junked up?

Weld in your patch panel, skim coat with filler (I'm ***uming we're not going full Metal finish here), prime with cruddy brown, paint with seafood green, you can probably get a close match with eggshell finish if you look in the arts and craft area spray paints. Sand thru the seafoam green exposing some primer, keep sanding if you want to expose some metal. Wipe the bare metal with vinegar and let it set. CLR and scotchbrite the entire car, wax it heavily, i like johnsons paste wax for this, it's heavy and made for floors, bit it's all carnauba and will lock out moisture better than regular car wax.
    post pics when you're done.

Weld in the patch, prime and paint it. Now it's just a matter of time for the rust to appear from the unpainted backside of the patch area. Have patience.

  20. Mix up some lacquer primer about the same shade and paint it. It will rust thru pretty soon
