A friend of mine (Jack O'Brian) in Madison, IN put this car together for a guy in Florida between 10 and 15 years ago. I think he put Isky cams in it. Somehow it went the route of the auctions and landed in CA. So many awesome Fords have rolled in and out of his shop over the years.

I don't ever recall seeing this car and driver featured in Hot Rod Magazine back then (not that it wasn't) but sure as heck remember the Car Craft Magazine article (early 1980s)! It consisted of an interview with John and an out on the street at night cruise somewhere in Detroit(?).

I still have the article here (somewhere).

"if you ever talk to him on the phone, know your shit, don't catch him on a bad day, and don't waste his time. he gets a little short with people like that."

I DON'T CARE WHO HE IS! I surely wouldn't kiss his ass or tolerate any disrespect.

    That is very unprofessional.

S.O.H.C. hemispherical combustion chambers, lots of cam duration and compression plus plenty o' initial timing.

The cammers and the Hemi Fords were awesome to look at and to race. They were no slouch at the drag strips and had several records.

  7. In all the years I've been around cars and Fords in particular I'd don't think I've ever heard a Cammer run. THAT was amazing. I don't think I would forget a sound like that. Sounded like it'd peel your skin off if you got to close. Too bad he didn't can it.
Closest I ever came to an exotic Ford engine was going for a "spin" in a '69 Boss 429. It was a 9 or 10 second race car, Streetable. Holy crap!!!!
That shit about them being slugs was just that.

There were two versions of the Boss 429 - street and race. The street versions, while not complete dogs, did not live up to their hype, hence their reputation...

  9. I have to say that I was raised by a GM father and his Mopar brother when it came to going to the drag strip. Never was interested in Fords....well that was until I was 40 years old. Mind you I've been around some Fords, just never really interested in them. I was at a buddies shop and one of his mechanics was an eat breathe and sleep Ford guy who always talked about his truck he was building. Well one day he brought it to work and it was a VERY clean and straight stocker looking '65. He popped the hood and it had a SOHC in it! I was really impressed with how massive it was, it looked like it was well designed motor....but still a Ford to me. When he fired that thing up it vibrated the ground under me I was starting to think this thing has to be built to the hilt. While it was warming up he said it was as stock as you could get as it came from Ford out of the crate!!!!! When he left and tromped it in 3rd gear and smoked the tires I had changed my mind about Fords.

I have yet to see or hear anything like it since on the street.:cool::cool:Thanks for jogging the old memory!

  10. I remember George Boskovich and his SOHC Mustang. I used to see it all the time here in the "other" Valley before he died. Fabulous car.

Pete Robinson just before his death made a gear drive for the sock so he wouldn't have to time the chain between every round with his FED

The gear drives cost HP...there were a few who tried 'em. Timing was definitely easier with most setups though....

In the mid 70's I was running a 12 sec 390 in my ole Ranchero. A guy at OCIR
named Jim Lytle offered me the Cammer out of his 57 Ranchero for $1000.00
bucks. He wanted to put the wedge back in it cause he couldn't make it hook.
I couldn't afford it at the time. What a fuck up that was. At least that's how I
    remember it:)

    That Merc is a Beauty.
I buddy of mine intends on building a 64 Merc hardtop with a 2X4 Cammer, at the same time he is building his 65 Comet with a cammer.

Mercury guys must make more money, then the rest of us.
I have been trying to get him signed up on here, but if he doesn't, I will post pics of the cars!

First off. Way wicked in a Merc. I love the look. Damn.
We have local guy here in Ramona with a Cammer in a 64 Cobra!!! With twin 4's! It was one of the continuation chassi from Shelby Motors.
I walked over expecting a side oiler 427...and Oh I think i wet myself. Sounded pretty good and race gas fumes ....sesh!

Gads, a cammer in a Cobra. They are insane in a big pig, like my Galaxie, so I can only imgine a Cobra at half the weight!

There was at least one real one with a cammer in it, I saw it at the SAAC convention in Hershey in about '77. Forget who did it, he owned several cobras (!). It only required slight mods to the footwells.

I was at the Portland Raceway in August 1992 and a guy drove up in a 56 T-Bird with a cammer. The ground was shaking...

I wish the guy hadn't been in a rush. He was trying to see who had more fore skin with the older guy that had the unrestored daily driver Gt-350.
The car sounded good but I think it needs a rather large shutdown area.
Buddy of mine runs 7.0 in the 1/8th in his 347 stroker FFR. With slicks...traction is still a big issue.

Jay's has one..Which is the only other one i have heard of. Which is a replica btw. http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.shtml?vid=270952

  28. I have a set of '64 Mercury dog dish hub caps that would be perfect.... otherwise I'm with Scooby.

That's the sound of the rods ready to come out the bottom!

All kidding aside, killer motor for roundy rounds, crap motor for drag racing.
