    You mean the exact opposite...RIGHT!.
The cross bolted sideoiler was for the high banked ovals. and the SoHc was for drag strips.

  10. There was a SOHC in a '57 Ford Pro Street on Ebay for a long time. Was a hell of a ride. I may be all fucked up, but didn't George Montgomery have one in a '33 Willy's ?

Custom, you are right, George had one. Cool car.

Great Looking car you have, by the way.

Oh yeah, I remember Dyno, but, I also remember Pete Robinson, Lou Baney, Kalitta and a few others.

Sorry, I should have stated that these things did not really like Nitro without coming apart. They ran great on gas though!

Pete Robinson pretty much had the bugs worked out but unfortunately he passed on before he could really push them harder. But they where better than the 429 Boss that replaced them, again, great for roundy rounds, but lousy on Nitro.

The SOHC was originally designed for NASCAR racing when they found out that Chrysler was working on a overhead cam HEMI. When NASCAR banned the cammer idea they threw the things out to the Drag crowd to see what they could do with them. On gas they ran great, but on Nitro, they kinda came apart. The SOHC was a package that used the Side Oiler as the foundation. They did not make a specialty block for the SOHC, just a regular 427 would do. Now the BOSS, that was a different animal.

Umm..actually, the block was unique to the cammer. A side-oiler can be made to work, but must use external oil returns - the cammer blocks had them cast in.

It was available as a crate engine - 618HP. It was not available as a "kit"...

True - original development was initially for NASCAR, but hemis were banned around that time, but Dyno Don (and others) did quite well...the chain was the weak link & gear drives stole too much power.

Went from drawing board to prototype in <90 days if I recall correctly. Somewhere I have the Hot Rod magazine (Jan '64??) with the Cammer on the cover & the cast iron headers glowing...

Flat, you are correct. They had the drain backs drilled at the rear of the block,
They had problems with the insane combustion of nitro, but they were and are a force to be fearful of.

    Sorry DaddyFink,

Didn't mean to sound like an ass, I have just always encountered dodge and chevy guys who wouldn;t piss on a Ford, if they were on fire.

Gee! fellows thanks for helping me with my thoughts.
On a completely different note. The heads can work on either. Right now the 429 BOSS heads are being made to work on either the stock 429/460 block or the original Boss 429 blocks.
A guy by the name Jon Kaase up in Winder Ga. is buidling them. I do believe him and Bob Glidden have a long winning history.
