Here’s a stock Ford oil bath that I converted to a 3x7” K&N filter for the 2 barrel on my 32’s flathead. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/convert-your-oil-bath-air-cleaner.1100242/
K&N has finally come out with a filter that will camp to the Stromberg and Holley carbs. Kinda spendy, in my way of thinking, but you only have to buy it once.
There are a bunch of cheap air cleaners out there. Most, not all , will restrict air flow to the point of making the carb run rich. The ones that come to mind are the speedway louvered units .
You might take a look at the air filter for a 78 - 80 Dodge Omni. The filter is relatively small diameter and tall. I used one to make a filter for my air compressor years ago. If you can find an early Omni air filter assembly you can use the top and bottom plates.
Hello When we raced the 348 Impala, we always took off the air cleaner. Relatively no dust in the air and going for a blast of 14 seconds in the ¼ mile was fast for us. So, the with the air cleaner off, everyone’s stock cars sounded like a bunch of hissing snakes. To keep the "no air cleaner" look and performance, we tried to keep them off of the three carbs. But, there was too much stuff floating around in normal daily driving, everywhere, so it necessitated an air cleaner of some sort. The chrome cap version was ok, but was a little restrictive. No filter element at the time. Then someone came up with a chrome flat top with a wing nut to securely hold down the air filter element on the three carbs, individually. Similar to Item A Item A I borrowed the three air filter caps from my friend’s 57 Chevy, for the 348 motor and it worked fine. But, they were his pride and joy look. So, I was again, in the search. Since I liked the three chromed cap look without a filter element, if it were around back then with the look and filter elements, it would have been the one. See item B below. Item B with some air circulation... But, the flat top version with the exposed filter was my choice. They look good, and a filter inside was as good as they were. Not K&N quality, but good. we just needed the extra money to buy those three caps/filters... Jnaki stock 348 - 280 hp motor and air cleaner with interior filter element... But, as money and time goes, the best air cleaner for my application of three carburetors was the stock air cleaner. We timed the difference in no air filter/cleaner versus the full stock cleaner. There was so little difference that it was not worth it to keep it off when driving all over So Cal. Now, I had money to spend on chroming the top lid, the valve covers and add some Moon Breathers on each cover. But, in the higher elevations of the local mountains called for a different approach. During any incline road trips or the annual Christmas gatherings, the air cleaner came off with adjustments to the carbs were a necessity. The adjustments definitely worked for the higher elevation driving...and full power acceleration. It was not just a removal of the air cleaners, (like most teenagers did...) the adjustments had to be made for good drivability during the whole week of activities in the thin air of the mountain elevation surroundings. 1960-62 high school look For your application of one carb and one filter, this one would do the job and you can always use a good quality air filter made by K&N to use with the proper fit.
A classic look is late a forties Chevy dry element air cleaner. They are built for one barrels but could easily be made to fit a two. I have one on my 230 flathead dodge motor.
Stellings and Hellings air cleaners are great. Kind of expensive but very traditional looking. I ran 3 of them on my Stromberg 48’s on my old coupe .
i like the factory ford on there. very much what im lookin for. would you be able to show me how it clamps to the carb
ive yet to find one that will clamp to a 97 with the barrel style top. everything i find is ment to clamp to the tapered top style
I've eyeballed the older chrome Harley V twin air cleaners figuring that they could be adapted to work on a single one or two barrel carb pretty easy. I picked up a round cover for one at a swap meet a few years ago for 5.00 or so . It's out in a box in the shed so for show and tell is this Super dixie 7 inch air cleaner cover off Ebay for 20 bucks,. eBay item number:144563841101 Dig out one of those too little air cleaners for a 97 that we all seem to have in the stash box because they were cheap at a swapmeet and take the base off. Buy a 6 inch od, 4 inch ID 2 inch tall air cleaner element for a lawn tractor and then dig out that scrap sheet of 1/8 aluminum sheet that you had left from another project and mark off a 6 inch circle and dig out the hole saw that lets you set that "base plate" down over the base off the little air cleaner and you have a different but not spendy aircleaner and if the top comes used out of a swap meet it is pre aged.
