air cleaner

HI
First day here; acquired a 1964 Ford F100 (y8) 72000 miles; NOW acquiring missing pieces; first air cleaner.. however one I purchased has a "foam" lining and some tarry stuff blocking(I ***ume) drain holes,
SHould can i remove foam; Did they come with this; I figured something melted for the tar stuff to form, but I can salvage the foam, as I remove the tar, I hope.
