1952-59 Ford Air Cleaner

I purchased an air cleaner for my 54 Ford with a 272 Y Block. The air cleaner I purchased was from a 57 Ford Retractable. I don't know what model. I have the air cleaner housing with a lid. The lid actually will fit through the opening on top of the housing. So, my question is: does the lid rest on top of the air filter element, or am I missing a piece? Is it possible to post a picture here? There are a couple of theses air cleaners on Ebay currently.
