So I've got the 6X2 setup done on my 401 nailhead and it looks great, but I'm kinda nervous about not running any sort of air filter. Growin' up on the farm taught me that dirt will kill an engine, but I don't really see anybody running or selling air filters for use with Frog Mouth scoops. I know the screen door screen that comes with the scoops ain't gonna stop anything short of a small child from crawling into the engine, so what are the options? I actually went to the hardware store and bought some expanded aluminum used for keeping **** out of rain gutters as well as some Edlebrock foam filter material. I cut squares just bigger than the opening of the carb and pressed the scoop on the carb to form the aluminum "mesh" over the throat. I then pulled the scoop off, cut a circle of filter foam the right size and another piece of mesh and sandwiched the foam between the 2 pieces of mesh by pressing the scoop down over the whole thing. I don't think it looks bad, although I'll have to readjust the carbs because they run rich at idle now. Before I do that, however, I want to know if anyone has a suggestion of whether or not to even run filters or if I'm going about it the wrong way. I imagine that if I have a back-fire I'll cook the foam and make a mess, so is there anything else I should use that wouldn't melt and possible not restrict airflow? Anybody sell a filter for what I'm doing?
