any one using air shocks on a 40 ? i have a ch***is engineering rear springs , only want to lift about 2 " , if anyone has brand and part no. if possible , shocks i have are 9 1/2" compressed and 15 1/2" extended ........ thank you Jack
An air shock will give you a hard ride if your using them to lift the rear end. An option would be extend your hangers or adding a leaf.
I would start with what I have and determine the make and model they are for. Then purchase the air shocks for the same vehicle.
If you measure the eyes, or end mounts you can go to Monroe's site and use their reference chart to find a shock that has the correct size and type of mounts. Then use the part number given there to check and see if they sell an air shock in that number. But don't expect much lift from any air shocks you can buy these days. The days of air shocks like they sold in the 1970's that had several inches of lift are long gone. What air shocks today do is simply make the rear firmer and only lift a small amount. They might get you 2", but I wouldn't guarantee it. Here's the file for their shock chart: file:///C:/Users/Asus%20Laptop/Downloads/monroe-mounting-length-specifications-english%20(3).pdf
Get a set of Air shocks for a 63 to 81 corvette. That’s what I have on my 39. Work great. I use them for when I have a bunch of stuff for long drives, just to stop the squat.
I have used the Corvette air shocks on two 38-40 sedans. I can look up the part number if needed. I agree that the shocks should not be used lift the car.
Air shocks are great to use as load levelers as Nailhead Jason uses them for. Cadillac did that from the factory for years on end. With an onboard compressor and a leveling switch on the rear axle the car will maintain a level stance no matter how many fat girls you load in the back seat. if you need a constant 2 inch lift I'd be figuring out how to do a suspension change to accomplish it. To me a pair of air bags on top of the axle would be a better option than air shocks. The ride wouldn't be as stiff and for what you want to do they aren't all that expensive. I've thought about the same setup for my 48 to maintain the stance when I have my bags and cooler in the back or the teardrop on the back.
