Airbag upgrade

I was told I should post here. I have a 20 year old airbag system in my 51 Mercury. It's been really reliable with minimal issues. That said, I think it's getting long in the tooth and needs an upgrade.
What advances have been made in the last two decades and where do I start (parts suppliers etc.) to get the ball rolling. Thanks for looking, Bumpstick

 

If it works then replace the wear and tear parts.
