Need some ideas for a aircleaner on my truck. The motor is a (yawn) small chevy, 'vette valve covers, cast iron intake, rams horn manifolds. I don't want anything flashy, just functional and looks like it belongs there. The truck is '51 F-1, great patina, super low with WW and Buick caps. Thanks!
How about a stock one off my 1953 Chevy six, beautiful patina, no holes, complete. If you want I am open to trades for nostalgia speed parts, decals, etc. PM me.
Since you're using Vette valve covers and rams horn manifolds why not use a chrome, louvered Vette air cleaner. It would certainly look like it belonged.
Yeah...get hold of a resto catalog and you'll see a collection of them. Neat stuff, shiny, right age, and actually used by many rodders, just like early Vette valve covers. Also look into Pontiac HP stuff, again best tracked through resto sources, for a few more neat aircleaners. In my memory at least, the Corvette valve covers were more common on rods than any of the aftermarket castings. I think at least until late sixties, there were many Corvette engine parts that probably had higher parts counter sales than actual Corvette OEM sales...
You may as well complete the look an put on an early Corvette air cleaner. They aren't all that hard to find and have the look. This one isn't perfect but the picture is good http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/EARL...004QQitemZ140242369565QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Aftermarket copy that you can probably order through your local parts house. http://www.spiderautomotive.com/transdapt2293.html Nothing like having three guys thinking alike at the same time. Bruce is right, If you look through early 60's Hot Rod Magazines almost any car with Small block Chev had Corvette valve covers on the engine and usually the Matching air cleaner. A pair of new finned Valve covers were pretty reasonable at the dealers parts counter and the local dealer usually kept a couple of pairs in stock.
15 bucks at the Turkey run last year. Yep 3 bucks. The cool find is the ring behind these. The inlet holes are punched in the shape of V8. They pop up on Ebay from time to time. It took a while but I found a mate to my 2bbl version on Ebay.
A friend of mine used a Ford logo hubcap for the top of his aircleaner on his roadster . He had to do some searching to get a filter that was the same diameter but it looks pretty cool . Maybe you could do something similar using the same hubcaps you have on the truck . I bought two Nash hubcaps to make something similar for my dual intake Nash head .
Please use something that was meant to be an aircleaner. DO NOT use some piece of trash and think you are being clever. No mailboxes, buckets, washtubs, pots etc. Garbage is not hot rod parts.
I like the looks of the 55 -58 style (non-corvette) air cleaners. 55-57's are a bit pricey, but a 58 2bbl style can be found cheaper.. you need to modify the base to fit a holley/edelbrock carb anyways, so all you really need is the top I have a 58 I'm going to do up for my 49... maybe add another snorkle to it. sorry no pics I'm at work.
Like 49ratfink, I'm using a 56 chevy 2 barrel air cleaner with the base made into a 4 barrel on my hot rod.
Cake covers make good aircleaners also. I find them at flea markets and antique stores for about five to ten dollars.
That's too funny-Just yesterday I bought one for $2 at a thrift store. It looks the same but mine is embossed with some cool 40's script reading "CAKE"
I'm planning on using a 1969-1970 MOPAR "Airgrabber" or "Ramcharger" air cleaner steup like these....The original steel ones are pricey, so the fibergl*** aftermarket ones should do the trick...a K&N filter will go in place of the expensive stock repro's. going on my 440 in my 55 Dodge truck. Hoping it will fit the firewall, i just love the look and since the car will be out of my price range, a fibergl*** replica of the cleaner steup will have to do !!! Derek
