This is the Haze Runner. We are building This bad 49 Merc for Jerremy in the SF valley area. He not only wants a very cool looking merc. He also wants it to realy GO!!!! and handle well. So we had to built him one of our super hi tech frames to handle all the tork of this 632ci 800+ hp BBC motor in this beast. We also chopped it 6" in the front and 8" in the rear. We had to made some custom 18" chrome wheels for this merc to clear the large dia disc brakes. The rear are 9" wide and the front are 7". We also had custom 255/60/18 and 225/60/18 wide white walls made, They were not cheap!!!!!. Example of front tires & wheels on my wifes merc Now we are making a removable rear fender/ skirt. It will have a large scoop in the front that will help clear those wide rear tires. We are going to have to move the stock inner fender well in only 1.5" so it will not looked tubed. The car is awsome. But how come because its an old mec that no one is busting on it because its non traditional? It has big wheels, big brakes and a big engine. Same thing i wanted to do with my 52 chevy and my post got deleted because everyone was screaming because i wasnt building it just like everyone elses car on here. Great job though and i hope they dont delete this thread because some people think outside the box.
Thanks, You have a Good point there. We try very hard to blend the old traditional custom styles with the new if it can be tastfully done. Lately i have seen some real good hot rod builders Getting in to build custom's and they just looks all wrong to me even thoe there workman ship is excellent. If no one back in the the 50's or the 60's was not willing to take that next step above or beond what every one else has done. We would have no Sam barris, Bill Hines etc etc to style our traditional customs after as they were wild car designers for there day. Another in agreement here with chevyshack. Traditional style is one thing, but to damn HP- that I don't get. Quasi-period Hi-Po motors should outnumber wheezy SBCs 4:1 in customs, IMO. I already expect my car to generally get the cold shoulder from traditionalists, but it's cool; I'm only building it for one person ('59 Buick Invicta coupe / Stage II 455). So far, the Haze Runner is 'doin' it right', IMO.
traditionally speaking....it doesnt have to fit into "others" personal favorites list to be a very cool car!! traditionally speaking....it should only matter to the owner and/or builder. if it is what they like!! just so happens, that this car is shapping up to be a bad mofo!! in my opinion. and obviously of the owner and builder. more importantly the owner and builder. traditionally speaking, i think people should welcome others. regardless of what condition, stage of build, or style it might be. i think people should just relax a bit on "if it aint traditional, then it aint cool"?? i have respect for the little fast and the curious kids zipping up and down the block. not my person style in car, however, at least they are doing something! same as builders did back in the day. making changes in the design to make it look and/or handle better. you would think that people on a board based around traditional hot rods would understand why these little gumm chewing zit faced kids are doing what they are doing! agree on the "tastfully done" regardless of the style, make, era, or manufacturer of a car. "tastfully done" is really the point in all car building. just my opinion.
