The only carburettor I’ve had with an electric choke was a Solex on a VW and that worked brilliantly. The Vette hasn’t got anything at all and that’s ok to start, it’s just grumpy until warm.

Yes I need to let the 289 to get warmed up a bit before I drive off... The Vette is a race car;) Used to do race support in the UK many many years ago on a Vette but we won't get into that here as OT. Let's just say it was painted like the US flag...

It might be all right. Don’t really know as it wasn’t well set up before I took it out, fast idle was way too high and there was no direct heat to the coil as the tube was blocked. Started bang on as long as there was fuel in the float chambers though.

    How about generator a pole?
It wont have 12v until its starts charging.
If you dont know, there is two poles, a:armature and f:field.

I was thinking about that last night but decided it was too complicated to work out. Doesn’t the control box drop the field so the voltage at the armature is continuously varying? I’m really not sure

Relay continously varying field that the armature voltage stays steady.
I really cant remember how much more armature voltage changes when use three pole regulator vs two pole, but dont worry, i go and measure it.

So the registration office want to come and inspect the car in 3 weeks and it need to be complete

    Checked ring gaps
    IMG_6328.jpeg

And put the crank in, those rear main cap seals are a bloody stupid idea!
    IMG_6331.jpeg

I had to pull the rear main cap as the side seal didn’t seem right, at which point the crank seal fell out. Put the main cap back on, and all the seal gubbins and checked the end float
    IMG_6330.jpeg

At which point I couldn’t remember if I’d put the rear main seal in the right way, FFS, so took the main cap off again! Yep I had put it in right but this time I took a photo so I didn’t question myself.
    IMG_6332.jpeg

Did I mention how stupid those rear main cap seals are!

It’d got rope seals and the bellhousing was dry as a bone!
It’s the ones down the side of the cap that I think are daft. Main seal is the same as everything else.

  17. I have forgotten how massive the FE was, been a while since I worked on one. I used to have quite the hoard of 332, 352, 390 and 406 parts.

The angle the engine stand is leaning at gives me the willies, I keep expecting to walk in there and find it broken and the engine sitting on the floor.

Fitted up the Holley choke coil and tested. IMG_6349.jpeg IMG_6354.jpeg

4 mins from closed to open, we’ll go with that. Just need to block the choke suction port and set some bits up and the 4bbl will be good to go.

Might want consider bigger main jets.
Those autolites accept holley jets to 1963.
    4-8 sizes bigger.
I have confirmed this for two stock engines, 289 and 390 and one with little peppier cam 390.
Last one was undrivable with stock jets.its got about 25% bigger jetting.
I dont know how it works with your islands petrol...

I'd drive it before rejetting it. I stuck my wideband on my '63 Thunderbird with a 4100 and stock jets, and it was close to perfect. I wouldn't have gone up more than one jet size on the primaries only.

I checked the jet sizes and I think they correspond to a 300hp T-bird so thought I’d go with them.

I’ve got a funny feeling this Autolite won’t take Holley jets as it’s an early one and they’re a different thread but may be mistaken.

Did some trial fitting with the intake. Possibly a controversial choice if you read the internet but I like the idea behind it. Plus it allows me to run a PCV and keep the oil filler tube so no need to change valve covers and it’s kinda period.
    IMG_6357.jpeg

Need to fab a plate for the PCV and get a different carb spacer as the internet was wrong again (don’t tell my nephew!), will have to visit the Mus!£&g shop

  26. I put a brace(wood 2 X 4) under the nose of the engine to take the strain off of the mounting plate end.

I think I’ve screwed up here. I’ve ordered the correct spacer for an Autolite, but it has a hollow base. IMG_6362.jpeg
This is going to give a vacuum leak where the AFB holes are in the intake. IMG_6361.jpeg

I can’t come up with an easy way to make an Autolite work with this intake. Cockwomble!

  29. A thin piece of aluminum cut in the shape of the gasket between two gaskets will cure the leak. Done that a few times....

Thanks, will see how many attempts it takes to drill 8 holes in the right place!

What sort of thickness do you reckon? 1/8” be enough?
