Thanks for the comments and suggestions, I appreciate them all. I'm leaning toward some accent stripping, but want to take kind of slowly. It's a lot easier to put on than take off. On the plane and bike, I accented the maroon strip with orange which gives a nice visual pop. Not sure if I'll go that route on the car or not. With a hotrod, it's more about what you take away, rather than what you add, so I'll probably get it going with just the basic colors and then just live with it for a while.
This was just posted on another thread, though you might enjoy it. That top looks so right to me. Bob
Had to think on this one for a couple of days, my thought is to paint the reveal maroon, then pinstripe it in the orange. That ought to keep the orange subdued. To get an idea of how it would look without commiting, you might try some maroon wrapping paper and orange 1/4" masking or duct tape. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Is everything you have this beautiful ? Ugly dog? Ugly anything ? Man, that plane's paint looks fantastic ... almost a dual cowl phaeton if you squint.
Thanks, It's all in the eyes of the beholder. Progress is gonna go dormant for a while. It's coming up on Summer fly-in/airshow season so I'll be heading East in a couple of days. Before I put everything away and covered the car up, I thought it would be fun to put the rest of the panels in place and roll it outside. Give me something to look forward to when I get back.
This is perfect, not many builds achieve that....everything about it just says "Craftsmanship"...the best builders in the old days would really respect this, because it's what they did.
I got the wiring finished up yesterday. Bled the brakes and tightened up a few remaining bolts, at least enough that I was able to drive the car home. Feels nice to get it on the road again. Still got a bunch of little details to take care of, but no big rush now.
Car looks great, wiring would be the last thing I did if I ever got this close to a finished car. Bob
I have said this before...I am not a huge fan of wire wheels on hotrods. But rules were made to be broken. I can't imagine this car with anything but red wire wheels. Like everything else on this car, it's just RIGHT. This car has soul.
Repainted the wheels in a dark maroon. Much better match with the interior and future top color. When the wheels were red, I liked them better with trim rings but now that they're darker, I kinda like em without. Good to have choices I guess.
I'll get a couple of good shots from the side, both with and without. It'll be fun to see em side by side.
The pic with the shop dog assisting is great. He looks like he is a little tough bastard. Nice color combo.
I went without the trim rings for a while but finally decided it looked better with them. Got the front floorboards stained and varnished. Still need to finish the filler plate around the steering column and the perimeter hold down strips. I'd also originally mounted the headlight and starter switches on the front of the seat frame. Very hidden there but awkward to operate. I moved them to the column drop where they're much easier to reach. Trying to keep it uncluttered but I guess there are some compromises when it comes to actual operation.
It was a lot of work cutting down the original standard top irons, but now that it's covered I couldn't be happier with it. As usual, Ron Mangus and his guys nailed it. Now I've gotta learn to drive it all over again. Got a couple of blind spots.
